Halloween! Horror! Anime!

Since Halloween is coming up and all, in the sense that come people like to marathon horror movies around this time, I like to watch horror Anime around this time(because I'm to cowardly to watch actual horror movies and Anime being animated makes it less scary XD)

So this topic is for
1) Discussion about good horror Anime.
2) Anything else that's related to Anime and Halloween.

I'm personally prepping for a horror anime marathon with some of my friends for Halloween night. Planning on watching Hellsing OVA 1-4 followed by Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. It's gonna be a great time!

Maybe I'll re-watch a little Higurashi. That should get me in the mood.

And I have just been corrected, there really are some moments when Guu is genuinely creepy though .

I was think more along the lines of some Dama themed episodes. Especially when she is chasing after the doctor.

I'm one of those people that just can't find animation scary, so I'd argue there really aren't any anime "horror" titles. There are, however, plenty of titles with dark and supernatural themes, ancient evil, and the like. I suppose if that's what you're shooting for, then... it should be easy to list a few titles.

I'd recommend the original Hellsing. I'd also recommend the Cowboy Bebop movie, since it's set during Hallowe'en, it can be watched in one sitting, and it's quite a good show.

Other than that... hmmm.... Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, maybe?

You know, anime's just not the medium you need. You're scared of straight horror movies, so have you considered renting some of the MST3K versions of some cheesy shlock horror flicks?

I prefer renting bad horror films (i.e.: Ginger Snaps, anything by Uwe Boll) and MST3K-ing them myself. It's a fun group activity for Hallowe'en, if you're inclined to just sit around watching movies.

Are there any anime that have legitimately freaked people out? I have yet to find one. Being animated, it really does kill any chance of it reaching the effect of it actually being "scary." I think the only way it would work is if they just went with cheap scare tactics, like a really quiet scene and then something happening out of the blue when you don't expected, accompanied by a really loud noise or something.

Usually horror anime, to me, are just really atmospheric. Most of the time that's enough. Atmosphere can go a long way.

How about Vampire Princess Miyu? It is very underrated. I especially like the TV series.

THis is gonna sound wimpy, but xxxholic creeped me out a few times. The episode where he draws the water from that well was a good one. Its not all about gore, its just the mysterious and creepy vibe it gives.
