Episodes 1-26 and "End of Evangelion" are one timeline. Death and Rebirth are a recap of Evangelion the series, and Rebirth is the first part of EoE. The new movies are their own timeline and do not "replace" anything. They're simply new and in a different universe. You can't compare the two because the characters act differently, battles play out differently, etc. |

Wow, I just watched the Japanese version of 2.0. It was so amazing I had to sign up for a forum just to exclaim my happiness!
I agree with Vaikyuko: It's basically an alternate universe based loosely around the previous Series. I loved it. So cool to see different characters, different fights, etc. Yes, it does have some excessively bouncing boobs / miniskirt scenes, but not much different than before. I think its done pretty well where 1.0 starts off as a retelling of the same story but starts to deviate near the end, then 2.0 just flys off the radar of the original series. Cool stuff! Quote:

So basically, it's a dumbed down re-telling of the series with loads of fanservice nonsense?

Is it just me or was that rather condescending ?
Anyway, I decided to give up completely on EVA, I found it depressing. Now I like EXCEL SAGA

No it's not just you, I find Rebuild rather condescending - trying to milk fans with a first film that exhibits a shambolic amount of creativity and a second film with a plot straight out of Evangelion fan-fictions you read off the Internet.
The depressing part is essential to EVA - if you can't stomach that, then you've got the completely wrong end of the stick as to what it's really about. It's not even that depressing when you think about what goes on around the world on a daily basis, it's just the crazy section of the fans who go on and go about how it completely destroys the fibre of your soul and flips the conception of anime a billion times over. |

I think it's obvious that it would be a fanservice. How many releases, re-releases, platinum edition, complete edition, etc etc have there been? If it weren't for the fans, this would never have come to fruition.
I love the psycho-social, meaning-of-life, self-destructive, introspection as much as the next guy, but it's been 12 years since I was sitting in my parent's house watching the original series on VHS (remember those?) over and over again. The "cool" factor in the new version put a smile on my face several times. Isn't it those little moments of happiness that we all search for anyways?

Eva 2.0 was pretty awesome. Getting rid of Asuka so quickly is the best thing ever in the entire tv series and movies. Why is Gainax trying to milk the fans with the movies suddenly an issue? Gainax has been beating the dead eva horse for 15 years

I liked it. Mari is really nice.
I specially liked how Asuka is not obsessed with Kagi anymore. The bad thing is that now she openly goes for Shinji. Nonetheless I enjoyed it.

They don't replace anything. They are the same ending from different points of view. Where the movies explored the real life execution of instrumentality, the TV show looked more at the mental (Shinji's mind).

After watching the Funimation Trailer for the US release, I am curious on what music they used for the trailer- is that from some classical piece?

Finally watched 2.22 last night, simply amazingly. Mari is awesome and I've loved the changes made to the existing plot of the original, and the newer designs of the Angels (Ramiel and Zeruel especially). I wasn't sure how much I'd like Mari, but she was definitely one of my favorite parts of the movie.

Watched the second movie and I liked it alot.
It wasn't as rushed as the first movie, which was nice, the animation is wonderful and most importantly, the characters are not the same group of $$$holes from the tv series. I especially liked Rei's personality opening up and while im kinda annoyed she isn't dubbed by the original actress, she looks and sounds like she is 2 or 3 years older in the new movies, although she is easier to understand when compared to the audio in the old vhs tapes which sucked hard at times. I was a little perplexed at the fact Mari could jump right in unit 02 and have things go off without a hitch, or that Unit 02 would openely respond to a stranger in the cockpit. In the original series the Eva's were "picky" about who was the pilot. No negatives on the movie at the moment, but the positives: 1: Alot of the original tracks are back 2: The Angels are more beautiful and deadly and they make the originals look like Gamera villains 3: Asuka isn't as much of a ***** as she was in the TV series 4: Gendo was openly shocked when Shinji spoke to him with authority 5: Rei opening up might of been a little rushed but her coming out of the closet so to speak and wanting to have a dinner party with everyone was completely out of left field and it leading up to Shinji making the save which was a great finish. I mentioned it before, but I gotta wonder what is Asuka thinking or will she become worse now that Shinji was there and saved Rei, but he stood their arguing with his old man, which led to Asuka being hurt by the dummy system. Shinji could of made the save but refused, and only because of that he refused to let the same happen to Rei? This is a touchy issue and could cause serious jealousy or resentment between Asuka and Rei if they are going that route. Last edited by observer80; April 7th, 2011 at 05:10 PM. |
