Aki con Washington States newest Anime and Manga convention annouces pre-reg is now open!

Aki Con is this autumn (FYI "aki" means autumn in
Japanese) November 7th, 8th and 9th. Pre-register online
to receive Tickets to your choice of event tickets (opening
ceremony, closing ceremony or cosplay) and have your
name entered to win a Aki Con party pack!

Cosplay Weapons Contest:
Do you have any awesome homemade cosplay weapon you'd like to showcase. Then sign up
at the Main stage by noon Saturday and report to Panel room 2 at the assigned time. There
you weapons will be displayed for attendees to vote on their favorite weapon. The winner will
be announced at closing ceremonies. All weapons must be registered when an
attendee arrives at Aki con. Aki con reserves the right to ask that any cosplay
weapon be left outside of the convention on a case by case bases.

Do you put together anime models?
-Referral Contest: Spread the word about Aki Con to your friends, family and random
otaku you meet.
-Flyer Contest
Design Aki Con 2008 Flyer

Looks like a portion of their proceeds go to local organizations. Don't know if that answers your question though, but that's all I found on their website.

It doesn't answer my question, but the word "proceeds" implies that they will be making a profit, and, therefore, are for-profit. In contrast, Sakura-Con/ANCEA is non-profit, and any money brought in past what is used to pay for that year's convention go directly to the next year's convention. None of the staff are paid, and no one earns any money.

It has been my experience in watching conventions and participating in the ACML that for-profit conventions fail, so I'm quite wary of for-profit conventions. I would also rather support a non-profit convention than a for-profit convention.

Aki con is a for-profit con that donates money to non-profits after the event.
This year for our first year we are donating $1500 to three different non-profit organizations including the "friends of the libraries". Hopefully next year we can donate more.
