So what's the deal with Tokyou?
Remember the anime raxephon, and how tokyou was enclosed in that big orb thing and it was like years ahead of the outside world or something, and the director was all "Yeah this is supposed to represent how fast tokyou is compared to the rural outsides."
and then how about that anime Nana? Where the reciver Nana is all "WOW TOKYOU IS SO COOL AND CITY-ESQUE, MY TOWN WAS LIKE A BUNCH OF HUTS!"? So what's up with that? Is tokyou really so much more ahead than all the other places in Japan? Or is that just in anime japan? |

Huh, sort of. Other cities are plenty close to it, but I guess Tokyo makes a nice poster child.

For me...Tokyo is just...too much. Too many people, too many tall buildings, too much rushing. A friend of mine loves it, because everyone is moving all the time, but it's sensory overload for me. It's very different from where I live here in Kagawa, but then I'd say even Osaka, a big city in and of itself, isn't like Tokyo.
That's not to say that there aren't quieter parts of Tokyo; a friend of mine lives out near Mitaka (where the Ghibli Museum is) and *that* looks more like the downtowns of the cities I'm used to seeing. Of course, I have about...5 or 6 collective days of Tokyo experience and nearly 4 years of living next to rice fields, so take my opinion with a grain of salt! (A friend of mine who used to live in Kyoto claimed that even Takamatsu, the second biggest city on Shikoku, is still "inaka", because you can find rice fields in its outskirts...despite having a population of 300,000+. It's worth pointing out that Takamatsu's current borders stretch to the other side of the prefecture...which is uber inaka. </random>)

I have been to NYC, and I thought NYC is much larger metropolis than Tokyo. Tokyo may be a center of Asia and Pacific, but NYC is the center of this planet.
By the way, I believe that the differences between "rural Japan" and "Tokyo" is the number of gay people. I have seen bunch of gays and lesbians in Tokyo. I thought "Wow! this is Tokyo". The "rural Japan" is much more..."conservative" toward gay people (well, it depends on the area). |
