I know that you need to have a wide range of genres, and one that appeal to new fans too, so...

Our club loved action and comedy. Stuff like Fruits Basket and Kare Kano didn't go over too well.

Beat me to it.

Whatever you do. Don't use Naruto. Unless they already like it.

Bible Black.

j/k

Gunbuster. It's an overlooked anime that gets a hair of attention among the ocean of Adult Swim anime fans (Naruto, Bleach, etc.). Just don't show episode 2, unless your club allows nudity and/or this is a college club. I recommend showing episode 1 first, and if they like it, see what you can do to show episode 2. If not, it's okay; the first episode has a believable ending, and isn't a cliffhanger, yet is only one of six episodes.

Gunbuster? Really? That would be one of the LAST titles I would choose to show at an anime club. If I ever found myself in this situation (which might I add, will never happen; because let's face it: most anime fans are downright annoying and embarrassing to be around) I would know right off the bat that 99% of those who show up have only seen titles that have aired on AS/CN. What's that leave us with? Bleach. Naruto. DragonballZ.

While Gunbuster is a good show, it's just not the right type of anime to play in such a situation. You have an audience that caters towards mindless action repeated on a script that seems to be on an infinite loop. Showing a 6 episode OVA with subtitles and old animation won't play out too well.

I'm going to have to agree with the suggestion for Full Metal Panic. It has a lot of action, funny/cute characters, and great English voice actors.

In my anime club days they showed a wide range of shows, new and old, while carefully avoiding overly shonen shows appart from the Yu Yu Hakusho movie and some One Piece films. This was a few years ago now though, and I had no problem with this dispite being fresh off the DBZ to Neon Genesis Evangelion transition phase.

I don't know if times have changed and what kinds of people anime clubs draw these days.

I agree with Full Metal Panic!. It has a knack for grabbing people, especially non-fans, I've never see an anime grab people that have little or no interest in anime, like Full Metal Panic! does.

Our club has survived for years with variety. Action, comedy, shoujo (ALWAYS show a Shoujo), drama. Don't get hooked on one genre.

If your club plans to show entire series (Over the course of 2 semesters or somthing), my club has found success in letting people vote on it. We get a few things from each genres listed above and let the people vote on what from that genre they want to see. Throughout the semester we will occasionally break the pattern each week with certain theme nights. We do a MST3K/Bad Dub night toward the end of the semester where we just show something really bad and let everyone make fun of it then go out for Sushi. A valentines day showing (Some years it's romance, some years is bloody and sad), a Halloween showing. We also have 1 random pick-a-them night each semester. We've done a CLAMP night, and Gainax ending night (6 final episodes of Gainax shows, hilarity ensued). Then of course we doa 13 hour marathon the Saturday before finals.

usually its hard to stick to a full series with a club, so I'd recommend Full Metal Panic Fumoffu or Excel Saga...any comedy works good, as they can be enjoyed without seeing the whole series

This is a pretty broad topic. What's the age range of the people in the club? Are you planning to show licensed stuff/fansubs? I suggest try finding out what kind of stuff your club wants to show by asking the members. Like do a "Show of hands: do you want to see action?" kind of thing.
