Top 25 Anime for Sales (Japan)

Saw this clip on youtube, no the Destiny part isn't a mistake, list with titles and units sold in a spoiler box so you can choose to watch the clip first.

Pretty sure this is DVD sales figures only so older stuff like the UC Gundams and DBZ are at a big disadvantage. Also this should be the average amount of units sold per volume. Also movies aren't counted, Ghibili would probably have spots 1-10 if they were. IIRC Spirited Away sold over 2 million copies.

So this is volumes sold over time? That's pretty impressive that Haruhi places so high considering how recent a title it is. I'd expect a recent show to take some time to sell more units than DBZ even if it's DVD and not VHS sales. A lot of fans would want to convert their old VHS over and probably own both (Like I do with Tenchi Muyo, Oh My Goddess, and Cat Girl Nuku Nuku).

Edit: the video says VHS, LD, VHD, DVD, LD-Box, DVD-Box so I believe it's inclusive of VHS and older media format though I'm not taking time to translate.

Those Destiny, SEED, Code Geass and Haruhi figures are averages per volume (so geass total sales are 44k x 9) so I'm assuming the rest is as well.

Then that puts Dragonball at a huge number of total sales since it needs to maintain average sales over more volumes. That's very impressive.

Wow, Air beat Azumanga Daioh? Kickass, haha. Also, I am proud Naruto isn't up there, haha.

Thought one piece would be on that list. Its sad that GSD takes such a high spot over so many better shows.

OBJECTION!

This list doesn't seem to include any shows from 2007, with Code Geass being the only technical exception.

I hope they get around to making a Fate Hollow Ataraxia anime, and/or a Fate / Zero anime, seeing as Fate / Stay Night is selling well.

Sweet, didn't expect to see CCS on that list. Eva being tops is no surprise. I still wonder why GSD sold so many DVDs when the show sucks.

Future Boy Conan.

Total surprise for me. Nadia's there, too. Nice.

The one simple answer to any question like that...

Stupid Fans

That list makes me laugh too considering the original Dragonball isn't even on it and Dragonball GT is, not to mention Gundam Wing being on it along with SEED Destiny.

Anime Industry is so small compared to Hollywood...They sell millions of volumes, literally.

Why doesn't the list have Ghibli's movies?

Spirit Away over 5500000 units
Princess Mononoke over 4400000 units
Cat Returns over 720000 units
Howl's Moving Castle over 2700000 units

(DVD+VHS)

Yay! Eva is number 1 (as seems to be the norm with anime lists from Japan)! I'm surprised FMA isn't higher, and that Nadia: Secret of Blue Water is there at all!
