Twelve Kingdoms

Can someone help me out here. How many episodes does this series have? I watched 10 dvds with 45 episodes, and i thought that was all there was. But something bothers me. In the middle, for 2 whole disks they go into great detail about the story of the black haired kirin (Taiki?), both when he was young and later when he meets up with Youko's school 'friend' in japan. But the storyline abruptly ended before it was resolved and it moved on to other storylines. This bothered me but i figured they were saving it for the end or something. But it never got brought back up. Did i miss a couple episodes? I really was interested in what happened..

(fixed title)

Nope, you didn't miss anything. This is the way it ended with no more. The English translated novels began their release this year (volume 1 is now available). Last I heard however, volume 2 does not come out until sometime in the spring 2008. As this anime comes from these novels, one will hope that what was left out in the series will be explained in the novels. Sadly, from what I have heard, the author has also set aside work on the novels having also left many fans of this title hanging. Who knows if any of this will ever be resolved. Regardless, this is one great series.

That is terrible they would dedicate so many episodes building up a subplot and then just drop it (this wasn't even at the end, its not like they ran out of time). Skip the 14 recap episodes and finish the arc!

Oh yeah on on ep 45

The anime follows the novels. I guess they wanted to stick to the basic principles of the story line of the novels, and since the novels didn't explain anything further they probably didn't want to make anything up. They could have easily integrated some of their own ideas into the anime and round out the storyline, but maybe they are also hoping for a completion of the novels.

If you enjoy the anime you should definitely read the novels. I'm about halfway through the Sea of Shadow novel, it's great so far. Quite different from the anime in little ways, but the same great story and detail.

Well, the novels (later volumes) do explain some aspects regarding the black kirin and his empiror in the later years, but that story also ends without total resolution... It's the longest story besides Yoko's in novel, so of course the anime crew wouldn't want to ruin it by adding their own ending. Besides, the author was the one who halted the anime production at episode 45, saying she hadn't finished the work.

They could have just ommited the story, and not spent like 2 disks building it up and then leaving it hanging.

Maybe they will finish it someday. It could happen.

But like Naraku said they wanted to follow the novels story and I think they wanted to make it for fans of the novels.

I just finished this series. If you looked carefully, the real "ending" was where Youko made her proclamation against bowing. There was extra credits rolling at the end of that one.

The other two discs were something of a bonus on how the reign of the King of En started.

As others have said, the anime was constructed from a set of novels, each a different story set in the world of the 12 Kingdoms. There's a decent overview of how the novels and the anime match-up at http://12kingdoms.faith-it.net/novels.htm

It's not just that the anime is incomplete. The novels it is based on are also incomplete. It's too bad, because this a really well made story.
