Movies you loved as a kid

What movies did you used to love as kid? The ones you would watch over and over again...

I remember loving the animated movie, The Sword in the Stone, Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze.

Movies I loved as a kid?! Geez, you realize how long ago that was?

Let's see, I grew up on some odd movies as a kid:

The Legend Of Hell House. The original, with Roddy McDowall, rather than that high-budget, B-movie knockoff. One of the best of the supernatural horror films of the '70s. Yes, I was pretty young when I saw it, too.

The Omen. Creepy as hell, I thought, in good measure because of the background score.

Patton. This is one of those movies that no matter how many times I've seen it, and no matter how tired I am nor what time it is at night, I'll still watch it to the end if I happen to channel surf into it. George C. Scott is amazing.

Midway. Again, if I hit it while channel surfing, I'm doomed to spend the next three hours of my life watching TV.

Oh, the heck with it... might as well just lump 'em all together: The Dirty Dozen, The Great Escape, Kelly's Heroes, Tora Tora Tora, Das Boot, Destination: Tokyo... all the great war epics. I still get the theme to Red Ball Express stuck in my head every so often.

Some other titles at random: The Night Stalker, Dirty Harry, Death Wish, Our Man Flint, It's A Wonderful Life, Breakfast At Tiffany's, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, The Magnificent Seven, Westworld, The Andromeda Strain.

Young Frankenstein. Probably the best of the best. If I was on a deserted island and could have only one Mel Brooks film to get me by, this'd be the one.

Cat Ballou. You have to pity Jane Fonda for having to play the straight man on this one, but dear gods - Lee Marvin is hilarious. As is his horse. This one's a must-see for Nat King Cole fans, because it's his last film. I think this film was my introduction to metafiction.

To Sir With Love. This was my first Sidney Poitier film, and it certainly wasn't my last. Wow. It's a shame we don't have as many actors of that calliber nowadays. The man practically defines "screen presence".

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory - Again, the Gene Wilder version, not the sad Tim Burton clone. The scenes: a) in the chocolate gondola, and b) of Charlie being confronted by Wonka in his office after the tour... those are the sorts of things more kids should see.

The Poseidon Adventure. One of the best disaster movies of the 70's, I think, and certainly my favorite. This was the first Gene Hackman role I remember.

...and finally, the sort of movie I think the OP was looking for:

Krull. Yes, I know it's a bad film. Yes, I know Ynyr's name is unpronounceable, I know that Corwin smiles too much, and I know that Liam Neeson probably doesn't acknowledge making this film. But I really like this film. Always have. No reason. It's a terrible piece of cheezeball shlock that I really did enjoy enough to buy the DVD. Besides, when Ergo finally gets it right, you just can't help cheer.

I just didn't grow up on Disney movies and typical child fare. I grew up on the films my family liked. I didn't really get back into animation until I was much older.

I almost listed those, too. There's another Disney film whose title I don't remember - it's about a kid finding the ghost of a girl. Something to do with him finding her doll in a well, and she's haunting the place looking for it.

When i think of the movies that captivated me as a child, that specific movie comes to mind.

Desslock, how old are you, anyway? One minute you sound like a seventy year old wise man, the next you say that you were young in the seventies?

This is pretty tough for me, because I like a lot of movies and constantly watched new ones every day. I would say there's a few that I would put up as nostalgia inducing for me, though:

Aladdin
Beauty & The Beast (GASTON)
Star Wars Episode IV, V, VI (particularly V)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze
The Little Mermaid
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory

I've watched most of those at least five times each since I first saw them, they're great. I can sadly say I've seen The Nightmare Before Christmas exactly sixteen times. I was quite saddened when Hot Topic decided to rape it with crappy merchandise and thus bring a bunch of idiotic kids into thinking it's dark and edgy. It isn't.

Actually.. I always had this wierd phenomenon when no movie left me completely satisfied as a kid.

It wasn't until I discovered Speed Racer (Through the early 90s compilation, Speed Racer: The Movie) that I found something that I could watch many times over and be satisfied.

I think, looking backwards, that what unnerved me as a kid may have been time-hops ahead and cuts from one set of characters to another. The Speed Racer movie (or rather, the "Race Against the Mammoth Car" episode, which was the part that I particularly liked as a kid), in contrast, focused exclusively on the main cast sitting in the "Mach 5" and racing towards the finish line, with no major jumps in location or time.

I'm curious.. what are some famous examples of this in cinema/television? Films that follow a single character with no leaps in time (what's the proper term for this?). 24 satisfies the second characteristic, but it has tons of characters in disjoint locations.

Not any movies anyone loved as a kid.

David Bowie's going to take your brother away if you try to hijack the thread again.

The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, and all the animated Disney films - The Fox and the Hound I remember making me cry. The animated Lord of the Rings movies I watched a lot, but I don't think they ever completely finished the trilogy - and... Wallace and Gromit!

I remember the shows on telly better than the movies -

tick tock, tick tock, tick tock *whistle* slip, slip, slip, slip, slip, slip "pugh, pugh, barney mcgrew, cuthbert, dibble, grub!"

Back to the Future
Masters of the Universe (Dolf Lundgren as He-Man, lol!)
Space Balls
Robocop (yes I was young when I saw this one)
Robocop 2 ^ same deal
Flight of Dragons (can't find the DVD ANYWHERE!)
Fire and Ice (woo, scantily clad, big-breasted beauty in a thong, ftw!)
