Geneon to offer downloads through Azureus service

No doubt anyone who has used torrents at any point has come across the Azureus client. Now, Geneon is offering downloads via their new download service Vuze, which already hosts titles from Central Park Media. The really cool thing about this is that the first episode of every title will be available free and the initial series up on the service will be Lupin, Ayakashi, Gankutsuou, GUNxSWORD, and Last Exile. Experiments into the realm of downloadable content are always interesting and I'll be interested to see how it works out. I don't know much about the Vuze service, but from the ANN article and from common sense, you know that the files and your computer will have to be running the latest in DRM for this to work. I'm not a fan of downloadable stuff really, if I'm going to spend my money on anime, I still think I'd rather have DVDs. Of course, that all depends on the price. But all in all, I think DRM is a pain in the ***, so I doubt I'll be having any part in this download service. Still, for many, this service could be a nice addition to other various legal means of getting your anime. Thoughts?

I hate DRM with a passion, but I do like alternate ways of getting legal anime.

I could see this service thriving if they start releasing High definition content this way. I would pay $50 right here and now if I could download an HD version of Paprika with english subtitles (legally). The movie was just released on Blu-ray in Japan, so an HD version exists.

Could work great to sell anime, people will watch the first episode of Gankutsuou to test it and they'll have no choice but to buy the series on DVD after seeing it because it so great

But I'm gonna pass on this, seems too much of a pain. I don't think that format will even run on my crap computer and I never watch anime on my computer. If it was AVI I could just run it in my DVD player but I never tried this DRM format(whatever the hell that is).

They've got nothing I'm interested in, but I think they're going in the right direction with the 99 cent rental. That's about what a downloaded episode is worth to me. $1.99/episode to own is too high, but a buck per episode to rent might actually be competetion for Netflix.

You not interested in Gankutsuou?

People should check out GUNxSWORD, its a very fun show. Although it gets much better later in the show when it gets serious.

^99 cents? That's a lot better than ADV, which charges 4.99 per episode (EX. Ah My Godness Season 2 Episode 1 dubbed only)

I don't want digitial anime though, I'd rather have the box set.

Not particularly. The only title I'd wanna see on there is Lupin, but I don't want to see it badly enough to download it.

*does some checking into the system requirements*

Ah, and I'm definitely not interested in downgrading to Vista or XP. So I guess that kills this service for me. Netflix it is. That was easy.

I dunno. This may do better than Viz's Death Note online plan because theres more to choose from. I like to own the dvd's personally but if this turns out to be a success for the people who are actually interested then that's great.

I couldn't agree more. At this sort of price, I might be inclined to watch the beginning of a series that I had never considered before. If the price continues to drop, then there would be a point where (even with DRM) I'd be all over it. I think the price will eventually drop further, as well. The real money is in the DVDs, and this is just extra bonus profits, with hardly any real cost.

DVDs are definitely better and DRM just seems like a big hassle. If they continue to develop this internet distribution idea to the point where its more convenient, I might consider it. But until then its fansubs and boxsets.

It's a good idea in a broad sense, but it's not something I'd be interested in. First off, the DRM is a major mood killer. Until it's radically modified or done away with altogether, I'm not touching legal downloads. Then there's the simple fact that fansubs are free from episode 1 until the series ends, and they're subtitled Japanese. I'm not going to watch the series in English (which the downloads are most likely to be), so even as a freebie, the first episode is of no interest to me. Add in that I'm not going to pay once to download episodes only to turn around and buy the dvds. That's just wasting money. Nah, I'll just be sticking to my DRM- and fee-free fansubs and the series I know I'll like even without fansubs. And Geneon has nothing to worry about on my end, since they're getting most of my money.

I actually enjoyed the lighter first half as well, the old school mech tribute ep was great (loved the song in that ep), much better than the old school mech tribute ep in Scryed.

I honestly don't know why the latest series from the creator of Infinite Ryvius, Scryed & Planetes pretty much got ignored

GUNxSWORD was a pretty fun series. I enjoyed it for what it was.

As for the topic at hand: still not going to download unless it's a fansub. I just don't see the point when I can just wait for the DVDs. It's earning them more money in the end anyway, isn't it? Actually, I would like a concrete answer regarding that. Do anime companies make more on these download type things than they do DVD releases, or what? I'd presume not, but you never know.
