Japan's impenetrable castle

I remember watching a discovery channel show about great castle's in the world and they discussed a castle in Japan that was (to them anyhow) the ultimate castle in the world. It had concentric rings of walls all leading in a spiral up to the castle at the top of the hill. As I recall it had 7 layers of walls you'd need to penetrate in order to reach the castle and even though it changed hands several times it was never conquered.

Does anyone have any idea about what castle this may be?

Oh, that must be Himeji Castle which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I think the castle is one of the filming location of Edward Zwick's "Last Samurai".
I have been to the castle once. The "White Heron" castle is amazingly beautiful. I believe it is the most beautiful building in Japan.

Yes that's it. Thank you ever so much, I'm glad I know the castle from a discovery channel show and not the last samurai film. That makes me feel more cultured

Good for you!

By the way, the location of Himeji castle is not very far from Tenchi residence in Okayama Prefecture.
That may be an interesting area for you to check out, Ken-Ohki.
