A Hidden Gem - Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin
First thread in a while. I thought I'd keep the trend alive and make everyone who cares aware of one the better series that I've had the pleasure of watching. I know of maybe two forum member who have seen it, both of which would agree that it's a must watch.
Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin Episode count 21 Vintage 1986 Studio Toei Availability Fansubs Opening Credits (Makes for one of the best insert songs too) ![]() First of all you've never seen an anime series quite like this. On the surface it sorta looks like a kiddie show which couldn't be any farther from the truth. In fact it's one of the more vicious shows I've seen. No, these aren't ordinary dogs, they're trained from birth bear hunters. The enemy of course being a pack of out of control bears one of which who reigns supreme. But this isn't just a series about blood and violence. It does an amazing job displaying unity, bravery, trust and loyalty. The cast is very likable and each different in their own way bringing something different to the table. Is it realistic? Hell no. Is the story ridiculous? Very But overall it's very emotionally touching and has it's share of sad moments. Drastic changes occur from episode 7 on where the focus really changes from humans and their dogs to just the dogs themselves. The OST is always very beneficial to the mood and has a great lineup of insert songs to fit all situations. Everything about this series is completely 80's to perfection. Fansubs Anime Suuxe-den is the group that worked out it. They originally translated it using a French script and I believe they are Frech as well (don't know all the details). They were very inexperienced at the time and lots of spelling errors are easily spotted throughout every episode. However, they are now in the process (pretty quickly I might add) of retranslating it and are currently up to episode 8. ![]() ![]() Ginga Densetsu Weed A sequel which takes place 14 years after the original. I remember when I first watch the original saying to myself that it was something that wouldn't translate well with todays anime. I'm very glad that I was wrong and frankly was shocked when I heard the announcement of another anime being created 20 years later. It's an excellent series with lots of ties to the original. Anime Suuxe-den (now much improved) has already subbed it all. I'd suggest watching the first series before this one. Check out the opening Well there you have it. Give it a shot of one these days. It's not going to be for everyone, but you have nothing to lose. Last edited by Hisoka; February 12th, 2007 at 08:12 AM. |

I asked you the other day to help me find something new to watch and it looks like you came through. I have never seen this show but I know that if it has your approval on there then it's something I shall enjoy.

You mentioned this to me I don't know how long ago... Well, sadly I still can't claim to have watched it, but I'm going to in the future, that's for sure. Really looks like an amazing show, and I can't wait to see it.

I've tried watching a bit of both of these series, and I've read the original Weed manga that was released in America by Comics One, and I just can't get into any of it. It just doesn't appeal to me at all.

Awesome. I see you're located in Japan. No wonder... It was also very popular in a few other countries years back. Like most more obscure series, it's not going to be very popular among the aveage everyday fan here. Like I said, it's not for everyone. |

The show is aired several years ago. So some people decided to have an Akita dog after the show. The Akita dogs are so loyal and strong in the show. They can kill huge brown bears! But I can't find any bears like the manga around here, cause I'm in Tokyo. hehehe |

This show was really popular here in Sweden when I was a kid, it's first release had a really weird age rating of 9+ (we had 7+ and 11+, I have never seen anything released here in Sweden after that with an age rating of 9+
)I know necro is bad and all, but this show deserves some more views

These shows are awesome.
I have both the Silver Fang and the Weed series on DVD. They were both released on DVD in Scandinavia uncut with japanese language with Danish, Svedish, Norwegian and Finish subtitles. Silverfang has the best story of the two shows. The Weed series has some great one liners. Great action and adventure with some gore.

I totally approve of this bump.
![]() Long time no see, Ephyon. Sadly not much has changed since I made this thread four years ago. It still a buried treasure for the most part. I honestly feel that it's the most different series that I've ever seen. Another rewatch might soon be in order. I know Weed got a sequel manga so it would be awesome to see it animated one of these days. |

Jesus, has it really been 4 years since 2007? Where did time go? Goodness.
I remember this thread, though. I'll give it a watch - it has me curious. *downloads* |

Like every other time Hisoka really came through here. Though I have not yet gotten around to watching Weed I can say that Ginga was an absolute treasure and was very different from the norm, exactly what I had been talking to Hisoka about at the time. I need to drop you a line again my friend, been a while.
