What are you watching Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha? That's the only anime I can think of with magic that has german spoken in it. I've heard plenty of magic in Japanese and English though.

Maybe I just watch too much magical girl anime.

Judging from his avatar he's probably thinking of fate/stay night

He didn't specify an anime, he just made a generalization. I know Negima (both of them) would use Latin. I don't remember the spells in Fate/Stay Night, but it may have been a mix depending on who was casting them.

I can't think of any other anime with spells in foreign (not Japanese) languages at the moment.

The only spells I can remember from Fate/Stay Night, specifically those chanted by Tohsaka, were indeed in German. I too can't really think of any anime with foreign-language spell incantations so it doesn't seem too common in anime.

The incantations in Ah! My Goddess are not in German. The high-level magic is done in Yggdrasil/Nidhogg code speech. Everyday spells are cast in Japanese.

I don't recall German being used in the Clow Card magic of Card Captor Sakura at all, nor in Li's magic.

I haven't seen much of it, but I don't think the high level forbidden arts of Naruto (which would effectively be magic) are done in German.

I dunno, I don't think it's that common.

i remember in chrno crusade, satella harvenheit (a german jewel witch) incanted her spells in german, but that's all i've ever seen

maybe earsofdoom is just sensitive to german, so he/she picks up on it more than other languages, that's sort of how i am with japanese outside of anime

Nope; no German in Card Captors, though you think Hitler himself would have done the damn dubbing for the TV series.

Not only was Mahou Sensei Negima's spells spoken in Latin but in Greek, too.

Germany has had a magical past, whether true or fictional. Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party sought to increase their power through the occult and look at the mysteries of their forests in the movie The Brothers Grimm.
