I think you mean "roumaji".

While it's ok to start with just roumaji, if you are serious about learning the language, you need to learn the writing forms too (kanji, hiragana, katakana). I've found the "Yookoso" curriculum to be very helpful (it's what my Japanese class uses), but if you can't afford it, I'm sure there are some good sites to help you.

I agree wholeheartedly. It's okay to start with romaji (that's what I did before I started taking classes), but if you're truly serious about learning the language, then you need to learn the writing systems, too. Being able to speak the language is nice, but being able to write in the language is just as important.

One online source I found useful when I was teaching myself some Japanese was About Japanese, which has information on verb tenses and conjugations, as well as lists of common verbs, adjectives, etc. It's not the same as taking an actual class or using an actual textbook, but it's good enough.

If you're interested in practicing Japanese with someone, feel free to PM me.

EASY!!!! Get yourself a hiragana and katakana chart. Write the terms you know using hiragana and some other random words with katakana(harder to learn) and then you'll remember the terms and the writing all together.

What I did, was I went to a site that has katakana and hirgana learning stuff (Kanjisite, JapanesePage) and I drew up some home made flashcards. It also works great for kanji.

If you really wanna Japanese, it's best to leap into the kana, and then start a good audio track (Read: Pimsluer) and start learning the kanji. Yes, moans and groans, but you will have to learn Kanji if you're serious.

I found katakana easier to learn, because 90% of katakana words are basically in English already, so if you can't remember if a character is 'shi' or 'tsu', you can often figure it out from the letters around it. Set aside a couple of evenings to sit down with a katakana chart and some Japanese manga or pop-culture magazine and just try to read every katakana word you see. At first you'll have to look at the chart all the time, but you'll pick it up surprisingly quickly.
