Funimation's Talent Pool

Now I know its common for a company to use a voice actor when needed or if they think that they are best for that part. Now I got to looking at the four newest series that Funimation is pushing, part of their "Babes, Blades, Blood, Beauty" promotion and found it very strange that Troy Baker is doing voices for all four of them and voicing the main character for two of them, Basilisk and Trinity Blood. He is a relative unknown in the voice community having done very little voice work. Is this just a part of favoritism on the point of Funimation or is their talent pool starting to dwindle?

He's probably a friend of the family... seriously though, I've always thought their talent pool was on the small side. I think that FUNi is just spreading themselves too thin; they go from being the 'DB/Z/GT and not much else company' to being the company that's probably licensed and released the most titles in the least amount of time.

Or, it could be that he won the roles the old fashioned way - by either being better than the others for those roles or being just what the director wanted. Funimation has a lot of voice actors at their disposal and it's even bigger when you factor in that most of ADVs VAs (such as Chris Patton and Monica Rial) make the trip up to Fort Worth to voice in Funimations works too. I have to admit I did like the way he handled Frank Archer, so he does have talent.

Heh, looking up Troy's Wikipedia entry I didn't know he played Action Bastard in Shin chan.

Wrong. They USED to be on the small side but in recent years they have grown very large. They have been getting a lot more new VA's(around the time Gunslinger Girl came out). And they have been using many VAs from ADV.
I mean they even used Scott McNeil who is from Ocean Group, as well as Johnny Yong Bosch & Carrie Savage from Bang Zoom(& others) for roles in FMA.

Funi has alot of talented female VA's, but not too many good male VA's. If they didn't use Baker, they would have to call upon some of ADV's folks to do these roles. Besides that, Baker is pretty-good in the roles he's been given....

He's Action Bastard??? I think he's also some of the sargents in FMA as well.

He's all right. I like him as Abel. I can't hear him as Gennosuke in Basilisk though.

He only voiced two main characters. All his other roles were small. There are Japanese VAs that voice tons of main roles. So I don't see why its such a big deal that one VA has dubbed two main characters.

Troy baker hasn't even done that much roles, I'm a huge dub fan & this is the first time I'v heard his name. I have heard his roles from Basilisk, Trinity Blood, Negima, Fullmetal Alchemist & Crayon Shin-chan. he is a pretty good NEW VA.

If anything this just proves that FUNi doesn't have a small pool because they are using a new VA for two main character roles rather than using the same VAs they have for years.

They are one of the best, unfortunately a lot of people are still basing their opinion on their DBZ dub.

I dont have a problem with him voicing two main characters, as a matter of fact I think he does a very good job differentiating Abel and Gennosuke. I just found it rather strange that he did VA in all four of the series that FUNi is heavily pushing.

And to Punnchy, being a Magic player I absolutely love the cards you made up.
