Just curious. Are there any Autistic leads in Anime?

Just curious really. As my lil bro is Autistic and i'm Aspergers (form of Autism, less severe though).

Thankfully we're both high functioning though, meaning we can talk and everything else. So we're not like Rain Man (although he's calsses as high functioning too in the film) or like alot of Autistics out there.

BTW Rain Man is an awesome flick And I hate those types of movies. I like Comedy, Action and Thriller, that's about it. Horror I watch but I rarely enjoy a Horror flick (wooden acting is amongst some of the genre's flaws)

And I was just wondering if there were any Anime shows about a Autistic charactor who was the lead.

Because my parents always complain about the stuff my lil bro makes them watch so maybe this would be something (if it exists) that they'd actually watch.

In a fansub translation of Zeta Gundam, Camille, the lead, calls himself autistic. While questionable in trasnlaton, he does exhibit passive agressive behaviors in an odd way (at least a first).
This would entail you getting into Gundam however.^^;
You may find more varity on such topics in manga, imho. I'm not well versed in the subject to suggest any titles you may enjoy however.
Sorry that wasn't much help, hard(er) topic).

I suspect that Squall Leonhart from FFVIII and Lantis from MKR may be highly functioning autistic people.

I thought he said that in the R1 release, maybe I'm just confused What did he say in the R1 release? Do you remember the episode or scene it was?

It could be argued that Osaka from Azumanga Daioh has a very, very unique way of looking at the world. I don't think she shows signs of Autism, but there are probably some of her classmates that would call her that.

If Rei (Evangelion) was more of a character than a symbol, she might be classified as having autistic tendencies.

Somebody (jokingly) referred to Rei Ayanami as an autistic girl, though probably in jest. But then again, the signs are there.

Hmm, thanks

I've wanted to get into Evan and Gundam for a while now. It's just cost over here, so i'd have to find a good and reliable R1 site. And get an R1 DVD player.

Excel from Excel Saga is probably autistic. And so could be Ed of Cowboy Bebop.

Actually, I don't really know what autism entails, so I have a hard time identifying characters that would qualify as such.

Not sure about Ed. She does have tendencies but Autism entails Agoraphobia, alot of Autistics fear leaving the house without people they know and trust (so not real Agoraphobia I know) and Ed is always on the go and on her own.

But I don't expect to find a full on match, otherwise it'd literally be Rain Man but as an Anime, lol.

I'm also mild Autistic and happy to see more people like me and also like anime!

I would love to see a good leading Autistic person in an anime, slice of life or otherwise.

I've sometimes wondered if the Japanese people who identify themselves as Hikikomori are actually something similar to autistic.

This is an interesting question. I can't really think of any characters that fit it, sorry.

I have a little cousin who has autism. I am not sure how bad it is, but he can't hold 'normal' conversations. He is around 9 and he already has this interest in anime (he didn't even hear about it from me....I wonder where he did?).

Well, looking Rei Ayanami as an autistic character, Miharu from Gasaraki is autistic too.
