Popular & Unpopular Tastes
Is your enjoyment of a particular interest (i.e. movies, anime, hobbies, or food) motivated because a majority of people like the same thing?
I think when there are people that agree with my likes and what not, it sort of helps me appreciate that something is well received among others. For some reason though, it makes me uncomfortable when it seems like I am the only one who likes it: Such as me enjoying a movie everybody seems to dislike, eating a food considered "disgusting" by others or listening to Kenny G. These things aren't liked by most people, and it seems to kind of question my own tastes in a few things, such as if I am watching this movie wrong, or am I listening to the right notes? I'm not sure if any of you have experienced this. |

Saxophones are cool... But I don't listen much to Kenny G...
![]() As for your question, I'm somewhat heavily influenced with movies and I guess a bit with anime... Reviews can really light up some aspects of a film for me and make me see the movie in a different angle... But most of the times, I just think "overhyped"... For example, Lost In Translation---hate this movie ever so much... HATE IT--thanx to the hype!... On the other hand, Casablanca is still in my top twenty... It's never going to be my most favourite film of all time, but it's just so charming, and the way it charmed a lot of people have a sense of influence to how I view the film as well... ![]() I like cheezy music, I have cheezy tastes, I admit it...

I have a weird taste in things too, mostly things other people dont like. I am a huge Billy Joel fan, which is something that doesnt really 'fit my image'. ( "Big, hairy, straight guy" as some might describe it.) Other things too, like Elton John, other easy listening music, cartoons, toys, a lot of things people consider 'for kids'.
I've noticed Old People get a worried look in their eye when I walk by them. You should see the look on their faces when I smile at them. I also find it easier to hold fun conversations with children than I do most adults. LOL I have another thing weird with music too, where I wont like a bannd at the height of their popularity. months later when everyone else starts to NOT like them, I'll find an appreciation for them. One such band is Green Day. I would care less for them when they hit the scene. when they quieted down a bit, i really listened to some of their stuff, and found a deeper appreciation for it. When I went to a friend later and mentioned that I thought they were good, he laughed at me. |

In highschool I would say so. But now, I like whatever I want to like regardless of what my friends do or don't.
Fashion, Movies, Music, whatever.

I make it a point to go against the mainstream. You never know what you will find if you look in dark corners, and frankly most popular things are crap anyway. Especially music, but that's my own opinion. I really don't give a damn what people think about my tastes.

Is it even possible to like something no one likes? There's probably a 99.99% chance that someone in the world already likes what you do. So I don't think it's possible to be original anymore.
It's not really if you follow the trends. You probably take a trend, try it out, and if you like it, you stick with it. If not, you don't

My taste usually disagrees with most peoples', but I don't actively make it a point to go against popular opinion. That would be pathetic.
I just like what I like. |

My taste =/= popular taste. Usually my hobbies tend to be more niche things, like comic books (how many people know about Marvel's recent Civil War, or DC's Crisis On Infinite Earths?).

Though I do revel in my popularity when I achieve it, I usually do not care if a specific taste of mine is popular or not. I don't care if I have freaked out co-workers by my saying that I like pet mice and have two of them.
