Anime with all substance, but no style
When reading reviews many would call some anime all style, no substance. Meaning having good atmospheres such as action, music, or well-done animation to draw someone in, but has weak plot and/or characters.
But I never heard of an anime having all substance, no style. Having good plots and characters, but a poor atmosphere, that fail to draw in someone. Can anyone think of an anime like that?

Only one I can think of that fits that description is Berserk.

I think the way some newer fans dismiss older titles might qualify, in a way.
The only title that comes to mind for me might be.... Now and Then, Here and There? Maybe? I remember thinking it looked like a much older title than it was, and my first impression was that it looked more "cartoony" than I was expecting. great series, but I can see how someone might dismiss it from a glance at the screen shots.

Older anime aside, I think RahXephon fits this category quite well. Although it has some of the best storytelling and character drama I've seen in anime, the action scenes aren't that interesting, and the background music is too generic for many fans.

This one's a bit on the old side- though not old school by my definition.
ROLW TV- Chronicles of the Heroic Knight The art is not as fantastic as the animation in the OVA. However, the storyline, character development, and everything else are great. Plus the soundtrack is really good. I like it even better than the original OVA.

Kaze No Yojimbo, horrid animation quality. Not much style because a good use of colors durring scenes. Weak character designs. But a good story.

Well the action scenes are lame but the anime has great style, art & animation.

I'll second Now and Then, Here and There. The music is actually very good, but the art definitely doesn't foretell the seriousness of the anime.
Another one would be Voices of a Distant Star. It's a short 40-minute film made entirely by a single guy on his computer. As a result, it obviously doesn't have the studio quality that others have, but it is a great story.

Well, I normally don't count animation, and I was trying to think of a more modern anime, so RahXephon was the closest thing on my mind. Of course, like Coach Z, I wouldn't know majesty if it bit me in the face.

I'm thinking Patlabor: The Movie, but even that has some great atmosphere and characters... I don't know any anime that has no sense of style...
