Eva you are not alone
I was curious about what is different between this new adaptation of Eva and the original series. From the online trailer it doesn't look like much except that the animation is spruced up abit more amd that the story line has been compressed.

The first movie pretty much keeps to the TV show storyline wise until the ending. The 2nd is where things start to diverge greatly.
Without going into spoiler territory (been trying to avoid them myself). The 2nd movie has New Characters, New Eva Units. One major character is introduced to the story far earlier.

What are they at, version 1.37RC now? I'll wait for the final build before I see it again. Those poor Japanese people who bought the discs, now they know of Gainax's wiley ways when it comes to Evangelion.
Quote:
To say that the first flick is simply the TV show compressed w/ updated production value doesn't quite describe it, since Shinji's attitude along with the feel of the storytelling has been changed. For a long time Eva fan like myself (I suppose), the alterations are a bit jarring. The spiral-into-madness feel of the original TV series is all but gone, but there's a sense that the story will diverge further from the original in the upcoming movies.

I guess the real question is: Should we view the new movies as the definitive Evangelion experience, or are they just Gainax's idea of an alternate telling?

You know the scene near the beginning when Shinji is talking on the pay phone in the empty streets and they show Rei briefly but when he looks back she isn't there and crap?
In this version the streets are overgrown with plants. stuff like that

Thanks to both of you! I like details like that in my anime. Now I feel a bit better about seeing the film. (hurry up with the DVDs!)

No offense to anyone's preferences but is it me or is this absolute crap? Making stupid changes for the purpose of reselling the damned series... milk every yen and then bail out (Verbal reference!!!)

There was a difference in feel in the scene I was talking about. I had a greater sense of abandonment and dilapidation. The original scene was too sterile and clean looking to really invoke that.
