Many people in Japan today consider themselves Shintoist and Buddhist, in spite of alienation from specific Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines associated with their family.

It's about as strong as the Hispanic influence in Maine; that is, a statistical anomaly and little more.

Churches in Japan that I have visited have largely been very stuffy and traditional. Young, vibrant churches like those in the US are hard to come by. The stuffy, highly structured churches fail to impress the younger crowd, so Christianity is seen as a boring, unfamiliar religion whereas Buddhism is a boring, familiar religion.

I wonder how japanese people treat to Christianity? And what about orthodox church? Is it so much different from, let us say, catholic church? Sorry, I don't know a lot about religion :/

They have religious freedom, although in ancient times, Christian missionaries came to Japan and taught Christianity, but when the Japanese went into isolationism, they murdered all the Japanese Christians to preserve their culture. But these days, Christianity is an accepted religion, but its not really big.
