Nope. Everyone else already explained why.

Besides, not all series with girls in the lead role are automatically shojo.

Re: Okami...did you even WATCH the series? One of the big jokes in it is that the MC's BF looks loli. Another character's big joke is that she's got big boobs.

And as for Harem, wouldn't that be considered Ecchi? I mean it mostly has sex appeal, panty shots, & fan service. This is mosty aimed at guys. I don't think thats fujoshi. Fujoshi refers to stuff females like. Its the female Otaku term. It litteraly translates to "Fangirl".
Did you see what some of the titles people put down?

Put someone already explained that....

As for Josei, any anime or manga with a female protaganst, who's strong, a role model, & heroine is considered "Josei". Because thats the demographic that watches that type of anime or reads that manga. I don't know, thats just what I think.
...that's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaayyyyyy off-base there my friend.

For example, one of the best female MCS lately is Marika from Moretsu Pirates...who's a high school girl. MP is a show that appeals to all audiences, despite the dash of fanservice mid-series.

Another example of a strong female MC comes from shonen: Rukia from BLeach....or at least she was until the author decided to fodderize her

Huh. That's... I... Huh. I'm trying to wrap my head around those titles being marketed at young boys, and it's just not happening.

What.

I'd be sorely pressed to identify a title with less fanservice than Azumanga Daioh. There's one creepy teacher, and he's definitely portrayed as an outsider.

That doesn't matter. If Stephen King wrote a children's book, it wouldn't be any less of a children's book just because the Master Of Horror wrote it.

There is definitely some fanservice in it.

There's a beach episode.

^ I wouldn't call that fanservice. They're girls, they're at the beach, so they're in swimsuits. It's plot-relevant attire. That whole scene would've worked just as well if they'd gone up to a ski lodge and were bundled up in ski apparel, looking up at the slopes.

@Tigress & Sora N. Thanks for clearing that up. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I started watching this because of this thread, and I'm on about... episode 26? Anyways, I am loving it so far! The animation is indeed great! Sometimes I feel like its too dramatic, but that part of the charm, I suppose. We'll see how it ends!

They went to the beach because that is the way it was written. Why was there a beach episode? It's an excuse to get them in swimsuits. It's why there are beach episodes to begin with. Them going to the beach didn't just "happen" any more than if they went to an onsen and were all naked the whole episode.

Don't know if the OP still lurks here, but there's actually been a lot of shojo type shows this fall:

My Little Monster
Kamisama Hajimeshita
Say I love You
