The animation was not awful. Just because its not as great as Brotherhood's doesn't make it bad. The first series was made in 2003, it was good for its time.

Brotherhood is so much b8r than manga! In terms of story line, sound track et al, I liked brotherhood the best!

I vote for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as it is a way better manga adaptation.
Watching TV-1 was like watching fillers while I don't like them at all. I got enough from Naruto and Bleach lol

I'm not finished Brotherhood yet but I'm really REALLY enjoying it. I'm about 35 episodes in and I'm not bored at all, while at this point in the first series I was struggling to get through it.

The first series was more mature than Brotherhood. Where as Brotherhood is a shounen series, intended for young teenagers, the first was obviously intended for a mature audience. Trying to choose which is better is like deciding which is better, the original Star Wars series or Clone Wars. It just doesn't make sense.

With that said, I thought the story in the first FMA was much more engrossing than Brotherhood. Brotherhood was optimistic and too far out there. I actually had to struggle through the last season, it was just that cliche. I haven't even bothered watching any of the movies and unless they pop up on Netflix, I probably wont waste the money.

From what I understand Brotherhood was faithful to the manga, whereas the original series deviated, going in a completely different direction halfway through the series. To be honest I really wanted to see another season or two for the first series, but I doubt that will ever happen.

My only complaint with Brotherhood is that it feels a little too comical at points. I know those moments are used to break the tension in a given scene, but I also feel it sometimes destroys it. Still though, I find Brotherhood better than the first series in almost every single regard and as I said before, that's the only complaint I have with FMA:B and it's not even one that hampers it to any substantial degree.

I thought Brotherhood's characters were much complex. Just compare Roy, Scar, Riza, Winry, the Elric brothers, etc. and you'll see just how much more developed they are. And I love the new characters May, Olivier, Ling, Greed(II), etc. Really the only characters that I find better in the first was Lust for obvious reasons.

Funny, I had the exact opposite reaction. I thought it was more mature and darker despite it having more comedy. If it didn't have the comedy it would be very grim & depressing.

And this is one of the reasons why FMA is the best shonen I've ever read. It's become a shonen cliche where one or two characters take the forefront and everyone else becomes completely useless. The first FMA anime was particularly guilty of this, andit got to the point where the only people doing anything useful were Ed, Al, and Mustang. In Brotherhood and the manga, everyone, and I mean *everyone*, gets to be awesome. I love the fact that the story becomes bigger than just Ed and Al, though they're still at the center of it.

(No coincidence that my *second* favorite shonen, One Piece, also has this quality)

Also, just because a story is darker doesn't necessarily make it better. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was darker than Raiders of the Lost Ark, but I know which one I think is the better film. Brotherhood told a much more engrossing story that just played the viewer like a fiddle.

Well....I did like Brotherhood a lot, but I don't know if reading the manga before getting into the first anime had anything to do with it, since I liked the manga, and we all know the first series didn't do well following it.
Sadly, I personally feel that in Brotherhood, they made Scar seem uber weak and uncool compared to his counterpart in the first. He just wasn't as....well badass. To me anyway.

Actually I found Scar much more interesting. In the first series, he never really grew from "revenge obsessed killer". In Brotherhood he really evolves as a character. This is a guy who used to be a decent man with a mom and dad, and an older brother he loved. The Ishval war destroyed that and he became a very bitter, angry but ultimately empty shell of a human being. So his entire character arc in the second half is him coming to terms with this and trying to restore some meaning and direction to his life.

Plus he killed Bradley, man. True, a Bradley that was already pretty beaten up, but no one short of *Father* could kill an at-full-strength Bradley.

He did kill Bradley...I didn't factor that one in.

I think they may be mostly the same up to that point... I know they're identical for the 1st few episodes, then they start to change it up when the anime team and manga team went off in different diections.

I saw a few random episodes of the 1st anime before I was ever really into the j-toons, but having seen them both now I definitely vote for Brotherhood.

Did he? I though Captain Buccaneer combined with Grandpa killed Bradley (in Brotherhood anyway).

Guess I'm pretty shot in the brains department. I just saw this within the past 6 months.

Bradley was half dead when he got to Scar, but Scar finished him off. You don't remember Scar deconstructing Bradley's arms off?
