Arch-Defender's Thread on Planetes

My set of Planetes arrived in the mail today and everything looks good so I'm finally able to make this thread. Just as I told Desslock I'll be chronicling whatever comes to my mind as I watch the show.

I'll be watching one episode a day and posting a post for each episode as I go.

Just as Desslock I don't want anyone to spoil the show for me if there's something I'm missing that will be revealed later on, unless I'm already supposed to have caught on to it and somehow missed it, then feel free to tell me.

When I first heard of Planetes about a year ago I didn't pay much attention to it, the premise and setting weren't in my favorite categories, but then I started to hear how acclaimed it was and finally learned that it was made by Goro Taniguchi, who made Code Geass, so it's been on my watch list for a while. Hopefully it'll be as enjoyable as everyone said it will. I'll be making my first post tomorrow morning but thought I'd open the thread today to save time on the opening post and get right down to the episode tomorrow.

Off course with that said I'm aware the show is not going to be another Geass, the reason I'm thrilled it's the same director is because he's made great works throughout his career and I have yet to see a bad show coming from him. So don't worry I'll be watching Planetes with an open mind and not a missguided hope of it being something it's not.

I find it hard to imagine anyone not liking this series. I loved the characters, and thought that the attention paid to scientific accuracy was really interesting.

I actually disliked the few starting episodes but as the characters grow on you the anime became one of my favorites.. I'm actually planning on rewatching it soon myself

-I’m not sure about all the characters but I like Tanabe. Don’t know why but I always like the clumsy ones.

-At first glance the Debris section looks like a dump with a bunch of loons, I can see why it isn’t a popular job.

-I guess Tanabe isn’t into porn Maki got the harem lead treatment there.

-Something else caught my eye, not all the characters (mostly girls) are attractive, which is usually the norm in anime. Heck, one of Tanabe’s friends was even overweight.

-So the ship is old and falling apart, comforting.

-As I said the prospect of being debris collectors in space isn’t the most interesting subject for me but considering it’s a real concern here in real life I guess it can prove interesting depending on how the show goes.

-She’s taking that plate thing a little too seriously, who cares what’s written on it its freaking debris.

-So the symbol of peace was in fact propaganda. Guess people were right, the show is realistic

-Overall I'm not sure how I feel about the series, it's going to take a few episodes for me to decide whether I like it or not (it usually does with every series) but I wasn't bored or wondering when the episode was going to finish when watching so that's a good sign.

Yeah I'm guessing it'll be the same with me, we seem to have similar reactions to such series usually.

-Lottery lucky dance, really

-Getting his own spaceship! Maybe it's just me but wouldn't that be a better dream to have in a sci-fi setting where technology is like 1000 years ahead of our own. It just doesn't seem like such a hot deal when technology is so similar to our own in real life.

-Wow, he really does want to win his ship with the lottery, my opinion of him just went down another notch.

-He's got Kamille's temper too! The guy may have been a jerk but jumping to punch someone at work and then getting beat up sounds pretty stupid.

-I'm guessing realizing his dream is going to be an important part of the show and that dream is getting a spaceship. Too bad I don't really care about that, maybe once I get to know the characters...

-He gets depressed about his future and the fact his dream may be unattainable but then a dire situation forces him to act and he saves the day at the last minute, thus improving his mood and giving him the push he needed. A little cliché if you ask me.

-Overall not a bad episode but not a great one either.

A lot of people, myself included, have bought a lottery ticket just to sit and dream of what i would do with it, is it so strange that people down the road would be similar?

Owning a ship isn't so bad or funky, Fee owns the toybox, and she runs a crew etc, and im sure she makes plenty of money doing it. But then i think it is more about controlling his own destiny than just the material ownership of a vessel.

Yeah he did went on about how his life wasn't going anywhere and how he was and probably would be doing this job for a long time day in and out. Guess I get where he's coming from there.

Dreaming about owning your own spaceship 1000 years from now would be even *less* of a big deal. By then it would be like dreaming of having your own bicycle.

You don't think that *owning your own spaceship* would be a big fricking deal in 70 years? Saying that it would be more impressive in a thousand years is like saying that it would be more impressive to own a car now than it was in the 1890s.

Not really, sea ships are a lot more common today than they use to be but owning your own ship (at least a big one) is still a big deal not everyone can do today, sure mostly anyone can get a small boat but you'll be hard pressed to get your own cruise ship. I was referring to how it probably would be a lot more awesome to get a ship from the future than one of current day technology, basically how it's a lot more awesome to have a ship today (on sea) then it was back in the 17th century.

You're looking at this from the wrong perspective.

What would be a bigger deal: Owning a spaceship right now, which are only owned by governments and a far off pipe dream for anyone not named Richard Branson, or owning a spacehsip thousands of years in the future when it would be much more common?

Think about what you're saying.

Owning your own spaceship right now when spaceships are still extremely rare and expensive = eh, not that big a deal.

Owning a spaceship when spaceships are more commonplace = HOLY CRAP AWESOME!

Id like to point out that planetes tech is a little beyond current anyway. Fee's ship is a debri collection ship that is out of date. Look at the space liners that take people to the station, the moon and even the freighters, they are pretty sleek and advance ships. Those are more what he dreams about im guessing.

I don't really believe you can compare cars and ships, which is why I used the sea ships comparison since it's more along the same lines and thus better for comparison.

If you're asking which is the bigger achievement then off course getting a ship when very few people have them would be the one. But I don't quite agree with the statement that owning a ship will fade in glory as time passes, take today for example, if I became the owner of a cruise ship I'd be pretty "Awesome, holy crap!" myself. Cars and ships don't compare because ships are bigger and pricier thus will always be out of the reach of many while cars are like small boats, pricey and rare when new but common place after a while and easily accessible for anyone who wants to own one.

With that said and now that I think about it, with him being an astronaut and all in an era where you can actually get your own ship, I guess it's almost natural for him to aim for that, especially in light of what Dazar said earlier, it's more about getting a grip on his own life.
