I've only seen about six episodes(but plan to get it since it's licensed now by Sentai), but Hakuoki is pretty good.
It's about the Shisengumi(which is around the same era Kenshin is set in), plenty of fights (including some supernatural elements) and some drama as well. There's some comic elements too, but from what if you're familar with Shisengumi history, it ends rather badly. |

So the Blade of the Immortal manga is probably as close as I can think of, and is good Samurai stuff in its own right. Tends more towards realism in its art style than RK, of course. There is also always the perennial classic of Lone Wolf and Cub, which is a must read for any fans of the Samurai genre or even passing interest in feudal Japan. |

But the main Shisengumi that they focus on is the Leader(forgot his name...Mizakata or something?)...along with Okita. |

I didn't say it was bad
![]() I liked it a lot. It's actually got a female lead who's one of my favorites. She's not whiny like other female MCS in series like this and she reminds me of one of my all time favorite anime heroines, Shurei from The Story of Saiunkuoku. There's a lot of action, but it's also shojoish in the fact that there's something blossoming between the Shisengumi leader and the female MC. But she also clicks with Okita too. And there's a second season and severalOVAS, but I haven't seen any of them
