...people get turned off from a series if a giant robot talks? ZOE is set so far in the future that biological computers and artificial intelligence exist. It's far fetched to assume computers can talk?

Well considering none of the other mecha talk it is indeed far fetched even in ZOE's world to have a talking mecha.. And it's not like it's some computer talking.. From what i could gather with watching Idolo and my limited watching of ZOE it's actually a human soul trapped in a computer or something thats making the mecha talk.. This would be ok if I was expecting a super robot show or something that went off the beaten path, but almost every review i read about ZOE said it was real sci-fi.. Talking mecha with a soul = not something i wanna watch when i'm in the mood for a real sci-fi / real mecha show.
Even Nirvash in Eureka 7 was pushing the limits for me and it didn't even talk 'till one of the last episodes lol

Good point.. Then again the Eva Unit's didn't talk so I guess i didn't notice much lol.. Not to mention you really don't find out they have "souls" 'till much later.. And on top of that Eva is defiantly not one of my more favorite mecha shows.

I did a search on this thread, and it appears no one has mentioned Patlabor! There is a long running TV series, a couple of OVAs and three movies. The series revolve around a Tokyo Police mecha unit who deal with natural disasters and mecha related crimes.
![]() The TV series and OVAs are mostly comedy, but the three movies are progressively more serious, the last one being more of a murder mystery. |

^Added. I've actually been very interested in that series because of the wonderful mecha designs. Definitely something I'll look into.

The Patlabor movies aren't my love or anything, but there's no denying those films have some of Kenji Kawai's greatest work ever:

Old school stuff. TV show was good, but very 'talky'. These were popular back when raw anime was the norm, and people just stared blankly at the screen. Good stuff though. The movies I thought were a little too into themselves. Maybe I'll give them another chance.
There's a handful of 16-bit games on the series... the PC-Engine one having a fun janken mode. There's a Playstation game which enjoyed some fame for a while, but I never tried it. |

The only mecha I've seen so far is Gundam 0079 and I'm not even finished it yet. This thread is going to be VERY helpful to me in my quest to watch anime. I think for a while I'll stick with UC Gundam and afterwards other Gundam series when I need a mecha to watch, but after that what should I check out?

^ I just went through the thread and found that nobody has mentioned one of my favorites: Appleseed. That's probably because this is an anime discussion and the Appleseed anime is absolutely terrible. But the manga's outstanding, so I wanted to mention it.
This thread was worth reading just because Bernard linked in "Sure Promise" from the Big O soundtrack. The last 20 seconds of that piece are played during Big O's "Final Stage", and it's hard to say whether the action or the background score is more intense. They go well together, though. I also like Stand A Chance.
