Kamina and Simon are too new. The list fails by listing so many new characters and claiming that longevity of the character was taken into account. Also, Simon and Kamina, awesome as they were were just archtypes from the standard hero quest story used in Western mediums (ex. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars). While quite awesome, they will not ultimately influence anime.
But so are Lelouch, Ichigo and Naruto. And they're from newer series.

I completely agree that the lack of any Miyazaki girl (and Nausicaa would have been the best choice) really stands out on this list.

As for Totoro, he's one of the most easily recognized "mascot" characters in anime. He is Ghibli's Mickey Mouse, no problems with him on there. Same with Pikachu, he launched something that everyone thought would be a fad, and it's become one of the most profitable franchises ever.

Also agree, other than Goku (and maybe Kenshin, but not in top 5), I don't get why any other Shounen Jump characters would make the list. Lelouch is also a poor choice. IGN talks about how manipulative he is, but there are much better and prominent manipulators in anime. Just look at Gendo from Evangelion

The could have at least included San from Princess Mononoke. That's the only other choice.

I think the reason they didn't include any of the Miyazaki females is because movies like Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke are easily overlooked. The people who made the list obviously went for many of the most recognizable characters in anime. Also they wanted to go for male characters more since there are so few badass women in anime who aren't also fap material or have moe or heavy amounts of romance attached to them. The Major from GITS also has some fanservice around her (some of her regular clothes), but since she can kick *** without any fanservice attached to it she doesn't fall into the "pure fanservice character" category. GITS is not that type of show, it's serious with not a lot of joking around except for the Tachikomas.

Internet lists never make any sense, and they never will.

I agree with a few on there, like jubei and Haruhi is pretty cool. Lots on there from old classics but how they can leave out characters from series like Tenchi Muyo! , Urotsukidoji(Anamo one of the coolest characters of all time, and his sis Mugumi), Ranma 1/2, Samurai champloo, etc.
Guess its tough, theres so many anime characters, so many good series and old school is always gonna get props and recignition, and child/kiddie anime will always rate high.
Theres WAY cooler/better characters in Naruto than Naruto himself so they stuffed up there.

EDIT: oh and Robotech had some cool charaters, speaking of old school.

I thought the list was quite nice. Glad to see Spike Spiegel and Vampire Hunter D in there.

This is full of s**t.

Haruhi Suzumiya should be #1, Rei cannot be outside top 5.

Wtf with Pikachu???
