They needed to put Mihawk's voice in there. When I first heard it (before I'd heard the sub) I thought it was amusing. Now it's dead.

Ugh.... after watching Part 9, I just couldn't take it anymore. I mean... my GOD!!! I feel like I wanna just run out of my house at 3 in the morning and go punch some random person in the face.

"Gum Gum Finger Net! It's the best way to catch a fish!"

More like catch a piece of dog ****! And....

"When you get wet, your body hardens and you can't turn into sand. Which means you can be clobbered when you're a big stiff!"

Please.... tell me he did not just say that.... please....

And.... oh yea! The little kiddies are really going to think that a suction cup is a weapon. Let's see how the president of 4Kids likes a plunger upside his/her head!

My comments on the 'moments' in order:

#10 - Opening Theme & BGM

The openining monologue about Gold Roger always struck me as being pretty decent. As for the rap song, it's still not as bad as Rock the Dragon. It's not good, but I've heard far worse. The inconsistencies were duly noted, but 4Kids are hacks, what do you expect? The BGM changes were also very distressing. One Piece music is some of my favourite anime music, and even though this new stuff isn't the worst I've heard, it's no substitute.

Did they even play any One Piece dub BGM in that clip? I wasn't paying it my full attention but I sure didn't hear much other than the OP. Oh well, I've heard it anyway.

#9 - Monkey D. Luffy

I have to say... the scriptwriting lets Luffy down in the dub far more than the actor does. Bella Hudson isn't that far from hitting the right note with Luffy's voice. With a little bit of skilled direction, I'm sure she could have found a voice to suit Luffy. Sometimes it's not so much the script that makes the acting sound stupid as it is the edits. If the original animation were shown, sometimes the performance would sound just fine... but nobody is in that much pain from suction cups.

Although I agree it's not the best of dubs, I really do think the commentary in this clip is excessively critical. Luffy could be a lot worse. Yeah, the writing sucks hard, but the voice... not so much. If Hudson would only shout a little less, she'd be doing better.

#8 - Unnecessary Editing

I have no idea why it's necessary to edit a huge grin into a smaller one, or why one type of gun is preferred over another. Al Kahn is clearly insane. I recognise the need for editing, but these don't help with anything. They don't help Americans relate to it better, and it is hard to see how they help it fit within TV standards.

Honestly it's hard to imagine why anyone would care about most of these edits. Removing text from everything is obviously part of Kahn's "Kids don't read" theory, but some of them are just so trivial. It would have cost less to leave these things, and I can't see how it would have reduced the marketability of the anime. A lot of these things they take out are pretty common in other anime, so...?

#7 - "Jokes" and Puns

There's not a lot to say here... except that the jokes are terrible, and sticking them in scenes which aren't supposed to be funny is unforgivable. I also should mention that this is the first clip to include Sanji's dub voice, which is also unforgivable.

I wouldn't mind so much if the jokes were funny, but seriously... hands up anyone over 2 years old who thought they were funny? Nobody...?

I will note that while the commentary is critical of Robin's voice, I'm not so sure I hate it. I don't love it, but random characters are often given a southern-fried accent in dubbed anime. She's not as bad as Sanji by a long shot.

#6 - Brutal Scene Changes

I really do question the wisdom of 4kids acquiring a series with this level of violence, since they have a stated goal to produce anodyne, child-friendly entertainment free from violence and other mature content.

They proved that you can do that to an anime like One Piece, but surely you could do it to a less violent series that much more easily. It should be noted that neither Pokemon nor Yu-Gi-Oh! has even remotely this level of violent scenes, regardless of what you may have heard about the uncut versions.

The violence is far from extreme, but it would seem to limit this series to the late teens and above. As we already knew, the scenes look ridiculous when sanitised in this way. You hit someone with a giant metal bat, they are going to suffer. You hit someone with a blade, they bleed. If you try to show the viewer that this is not the case, they will have no respect for the story you're trying to tell.

If you're going to go for bloodless violence, then you have to make it a lower grade of violence than is on display here.

Damn, if your gonna edit it that badly you could atleast do the whole thing. Or maybe that was 'too much money'

Ive been so tempted to watch this but ive managed to hold back from doing so as of now, the only bit of One Piece dub ive had the misfortune to watch is the rap opening which my friend showed me for kicks and unfortunately i happened to be eating a apple at the time and nearly choked to death with shock.
I dont want to tarnish One Piece with the dub but poison suction sounds well actually i dont know a word for what it sounds like.

My friend says the only part of the dub that is still One Piece is the name.
