Introduction
The purpose of this thread is to set a cornerstone upon which a fanfiction community can be built here on AN. As with most artistic endeavors, our motives are entirely selfish. In the immediate term, we hope to increase the visibility of our own work. Over the short term, we hope to improve the level of peer review and criticism we are able to share and receive, which we believe will allow us to improve as writers. We hope to share this information among ourselves and pass it on to the newer members of the community as they join. We believe that if we can create a sufficiently robust and lively writing community here at AN, we can raise the overall awareness and interest in fanfiction among the AnimeNation membership, thus achieving our ultimate goals of Hugo Award nominations for all, global domination, and finally, our own subforum.
This thread will attempt to accomplish the following goals: 1) Establish fanfiction posting guidelines. The more consistently fanfiction is posted, the easier it is to find, read and review. 2) Provide an index to works of fanfiction and their authors on AN. 3) Provide an index to writing-related materials on AN. This is tentatively called the AN Fanfiction Academy. 4) Serve as a central resource for the fanfiction community on AN wishing to provide peer advice and review. To make sure this guide stays up to date, the indexing posts in this thread will be updated as new works, authors and lessons are added to the Fan Art & Fiction subforum. If you see a particular addition that has not yet been added to the thread indexes, feel free to PM the person who made that entry (Leader Desslock, Shiroiyuki or the author in question)

Posting Guidelines
Note: this is a work in progress, and it's just a bunch of suggestions anyway. Use if helpful, ignore if not. -LD
1. Prose does not need to be hosted on AN directly. If you want to create a thread in which to post your prose, that's fine. Given AN's post character limit and policy of deleting some older threads, many writers may prefer not to do this. Some writers may host their fanfiction on personal websites, while other writers may post to sites like fanfiction.net. We feel that all of these are perfectly acceptable options. The rule of thumb is that so long as someone interested in reading your story can get to your prose, it's all good. 1a. If you post your prose here on AN, make sure you maintain a copy off-site for your own records in case the thread is ever lost. If you post your prose elsewhere, simply post a link to where it's hosted, followed by whatever other comments are relevant. 2. Make sure your work is accessible. If you host your fiction in an access controlled site, you may only get hits and comments from people who can access your host. You should either post your work in a publicly accessible location, or else put a warning beside your link that states the requirements that must be met to access your work. 3. One fanfic per thread. This will help make your work easier to index, read and critique. All prose (or links to prose) should be contained in the same thread, along with all critical comments regarding that work. 4. Requested information. All fictional works posted in the Fan Art & Fiction subforum should adhere to the following guidelines: The first post of your fanfiction thread should contain: - Title of your fanfiction story - Title(s) upon which work is based (or 'original', if none) - Type of work (crossover, AU, etc. - see below) - Rating of work (G, PG, PG-13, etc- see below) - Status of work (Complete, In-Progress, Stalled, Abandoned, etc.) - Content warnings, if applicable (mature content, language, yaoi/yuri, spoilers, etc.) - Copyright info/disclaimers (i.e.: these characters aren't mine, etc.) - Basic description (setup/synopsis - just a quickie teaser intro to let us know what we're getting into) Additionally, authors wishing to be really polite to their readers can include a link to each chapter of their work in the first post. (example here) When finally posted, a well-indexed fanfic thread will start out something like this: Quote:
- [ALT. PAIR] = Fanfic features a pairing between characters - [AU] = Alternate Universe - [CANON] = Story does not conflict with, nor add anything new to the original - [CROSSOVER] = When different series collide! - [FANON] = Adheres to the bulk of fanfiction conventions regarding the series - [LEMON] = Contains explicit sexual content (i.e.: Porn) - [LIME] = Contains non-explicit sexual content (think Cinemax) - [MST3K] = Work is a MSTing of another work - [OOC] = Features characters behaving Out Of Character from their canon definitions - [ORIGINAL] = Original creation not based on another series - [ORIG CHAR] = Adds your original character to the series - [SELF INS.] = The author has inserted him/herself into the narrative - [SLASH] = See [ALT. PAIR] - [YAOI] / [YURI] = Because sometimes [ALT. PAIR][OOC][LEMON] isn't enough. ![]() 4b. Content Rating - To give your audience fair warning on what to expect from your work, you should add a Content Rating tag. This should come from a recognized system, such as the fanfic rating system on fanfiction.net, or else something like the MPAA's Rating System. This sort of voluntary 'heads up' is considered good fanfic etiquette, particularly when your content substantially diverges from the theme, look and feel of the original work.

Fanfiction Academy
Below you will find links to various discussions about the craft of writing fiction. These discussions (or 'courses') are written by AN members for the benefit of other AN members. There's no enrollment, no entry exam, and best of all - no tuition to participate in these courses. All that's required is an interest in the topic and a willingness to participate for the benefit of the group.
Each course topic is presented by an experienced writer (or 'instructor') who will state the topic for discussion, present an essay covering the topic (often with illustrative examples), then open the topic up for public discussion. Optionally, the instructor may choose to post a series of relevant exercises for interested attendees to try, in order to foster class participation and discussion. Class participants are encouraged to ask questions related to the topic, post samples of writing for peer comment and review, or bring up anything else they think their fellow writers might find helpful to develop an understanding of the topic. I'm hoping to take advantage of the summer lull and post fresh course topics every week or two. Course Catalogue ...to be determined... Writing Exercises, Activities and Contests HK's Writing Challenge - You write the scenario, Holy Knight writes the prose. A brave self-challenge. Useful Resources For Writers ...under construction... Is There Something You Want To Teach? Since the focus of the Academy is to create a set of peer group discussions rather than a "we teach, you learn" set of lectures, anyone who wishes to submit a discussion for inclusion in the Academy's course catalogue is encouraged to do so. To keep this process somewhat ordered, I would make the following recommendations: Course topics should be covered in depth. - A shallow treatment of a topic will lead to a shallow discussion that will lead to a shallow understanding of the topic. If you're gonna stand up to the podium and tell people to listen to what you have to say, you should try to make it worth their time. Take yourself with a grain of salt. - We're all writers, we all make mistakes, and none of us is perfect. A good instructor learns as much as the students in his class. Coordinate your efforts with other writers. - If you thought something was important enough to teach, odds are you're not the only one. Ask around, see if anyone else is covering the topic. If someone else has already started writing about the topic, consider joining them! Two writers have twice as much perspective on a topic. Complete your initial presentation before opening up the topic for discussion. - Write your entire essay, get it proofread, rewrite it, make it understandable, and make sure you're included all of your samples and examples before you post the thread. Trust me when I say that a class only goes as smoothly as you make it go. That's especially true for live teaching, but the same principle applies in a discussion forum. Have fun! - People will get a lot more out of your course if they enjoy it. So will you. There's no reason a writing discussion has to be as dry as The Little Brown Handbook or Strunk's The Elements Of Style. It's just an online forum, and we're all a bunch of people who enjoy playing with words. Keep it light, keep it simple and your audience will thank you.

Links to writing-centric information and stuff of general interest to writers.
Good Places To Post Your Stuff! fanfiction.net - Pretty much the central repository of fanfiction on the web. You can find anything you want here, but it can be cliquey and your wheat can easily get lost in the chaff. Definitely worth a browse, however. Shiroiyuki's Fanart Forum - Run by AN's own lovely and talented Shiroiyuki. Despite the name, there's an entire section devoted to fiction, with comprehensive information on the craft of writing. Definitely worth a look. MediaMiner.org - Another art/fanfiction site with lots to see. FictionPress.com - Geared more toward authors of original works. DarkScribes.org - Hosts both original and fan-inspired works. AN Threads The Fanfic Writers Need Assistance! Favorite Fanfics? I Suck At Writing! Writing Help Interactive Fiction - As one of the remaining practitioners of this obscure art form, I felt an obligation to bring it up. Anyone who's ever longed to hear the roar of the Frigid river as it spills over the top of Flood Control Dam #3 should check in here. ~LD Services CafePress.com - Need to print your own books or make some marketing shwag for your next book signing? This is the place to go.

AN Fanfiction Writers FAQ
Since we're gonna get 'em, I might as well post 'em and cut down on the number of redundant threads we get. Anyone who has a question not answered below should PM me or post it here.
1. What's the deal with this thread? Why a fanfiction index? This initial inspiration for this thread came from a suggestion that Shiroiyuki made in the AN Q&A subforum. She originally thought it would be a nice idea if the fanfic authors had their own subforum in which they could exchange feedback with one another as writing peers. The subforum idea has been shelved, so we came up with this index thread idea instead. 2. Who maintains this thread? For now, I do: Leader Desslock. 3. Who are you? Are you a mod? Why do you get to control what gets posted in this thread? I'm just another AN member. I'm not a mod. I'm just the guy who came up with the specific idea and spent a significant amout of time implementing it. Anyone else could've done the same, in which case it'd be their baby instead of mine. 4. What happens to the index thread if you get hit by a truck? The AN Forum Database Administrator should be able to transfer control of the content of these indices to someone else with little difficulty, so let's not read my will just yet. 5. What happens when something is added to the Fan Art and Fiction subforum? I'm on quite regularly, and I'll check the FA&F at least once every time I come on. If I see that something's been added to the FA&F subforum, I'll add it to the appropriate indices in this thread. 6. How complete are the indices? I went back a year to search for fanfiction, which was about 27 pages worth of forum threads. There are undoubtedly older threads that I missed, but I had to decide on a cutoff point and a year was it. So I've picked up pretty much anything that's been done since the summer of 2005. Anyone finding something they'd like me to index can PM me and I'll add it as soon as I can. 7. Where should I post feedback? Can I post in this thread? I would ask that you do not post in this thread at all for now. You can always PM me, make another thread related to the topic, or even drop a question into this thread if you like. The information in this thread's indices will be exponentially easier to maintain if it contains no extraneous information. Trust me on this. 8. What is this 'Fanfiction Academy' thing? We asked around, and several of the writers said they'd like to have a discussion on how to write descriptive passages more effectively, or how to handle dialogue - stuff like that. We decided to create a series of threads that addressed these different areas (plus a few). Think of them as roundtable discussions, if you will. We'll set the agenda and start the ball rolling; others are free to join the discussion as they feel they have something to contribute. 9. I'm a writer, but I don't write fanfiction. Can I still join in? Absolutely! The group here happens to have a fanfiction bent because it's an anime forum, but all forms of writing are welcome, within AN posting guidelines. 10. You just said 'the group here'. Is this one of those AN Clubs we've heard about? Nope, this is not an AN Club. Those were abolished as outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuated social differences in our forum society. This is entirely different - we're now an autonomous collective of writers whose executive authority is derived from a mandate from the masses of our peers. We'll have no moistened bints lobbin' scimitars in these parts. 11. This is great, but I'm really not interested in writing. When do you plan to add indices for the fan art in the FA&F subforum? Never. I'm not an artist, and the art community on AN has always been more than lively enough without my help. I'll stick to what I know: Writing. 12. Someone told me that writing fanfiction is illegal. Is this true? Not always, but usually. Writing a piece of fanfiction is different from writing original fiction in that you're basing your story on another author's characters and situations. If you write it for yourself, never share it, never post it anywhere, and never let anyone else know it exists, then it's not much of an issue. The moment you place that story out where anyone can see it (for profit or released into the public domain - doesn't matter), you're probably (though not certainly) violating the licenseholder's copyrights on the source material. Why not "certainly"? Because certain types of works are allowed - parodies, for one thing. So if you write a true DBZ parody (not just 'a funny story', but a true parody of DBZ), you can do what you like with it - publish it, sell it, give it away for free... whatever. If you write the typical types of fanfiction you'll see indexed here, you're probably stepping on the rights of the licenseholder. Will that get you sued? It can, but it probably won't. Most US companies seem to take the following approach: As long as it's very clear that the work is a fan-made work, distributed for free, that has no connection to the licensing company save for the disclaimer that it's based on their property & written without permission, it'll probably be ignored. The moment you try to pawn it off as licensed material, or you make one penny from it, or you start leading the fanbase in a direction counter to the licensor's wishes, that's when the Men In Black will be knocking on your door. 13. LD, I've just finished looking through this thread and have to ask: are you completely out of your mind? - Yes, most likely.

Other Works
Manga, doujinshi, poetry, songfics... they're all writing. As such works are posted in their own threads, they'll get indexed here.
Poetry The Altar - by Miduki Punching Walls & Valentines - by Rabbit Saline - by Rabbit Manga / Doujinshi I haven't yet gone through the FA&F subforum to find and index these, but there are a few. If anyone sees any manga/doujinshi works by AN members they'd like added to the index, PM me. ~LD Songfics Singing in the Sky (Songfic) - by goodbyetracy Interactive Fiction (not really IF, but what the heck... ~LD) An Interactive Fiction Story - by AlienKid

Please do not post after this post. This post will be deleted and updated each time something is added to the index. This should make the thread show as 'updated' from the main FA&F subforum.
