Soluzar's Gaming Journal

I'm going to use this space to comment on anything I find noteworthy, interesting or amusing about the games I'm playing recently. I don't necessarily assume it will be an interesting read for anyone else, but it might well be an interesting record for me.

Enchanted Arms? More Like Drag-On Quest!

Posted June 27th, 2010 at 12:57 AM by Soluzar (Soluzar's Gaming Journal)

I'm within just a few hours of completing Enchanted Arms... the final boss is a bit difficult though, so I plan on doing some sidequests to improve my party's offensive options before that.

I can't really recommend the game at all. It has some good points, but... they are far outweighed by the bad points. If I had realised just how bad some parts of the game could be, I would never have started. Having started, though... I figured I might as well keep playing as long as it was easy....

As Addictions Go, At Least It Is Legal...

Posted June 27th, 2010 at 12:42 AM by Soluzar (Soluzar's Gaming Journal)

I fell off the wagon. I have abstained for many, many months since my last slip, but now the addiction has me in full grip once more. Just like an alcoholic might say, "One is too many, ten isn't enough."

Of course, he probably wouldn't imagine that sentiment could also apply to Pokémon.

It's an odd little addiction. Somehow the collecting mechanism taps right into the reward center of my brain, and like a rat in a science experiment I just keep on hitting...

The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom - The Time Travelling Pie Thief

Posted February 17th, 2010 at 08:47 AM by Soluzar (Soluzar's Gaming Journal)

If you'll pardon the somewhat pedestrian title of today's blog entry, I have a rather fascinating game on my hands today. The thing about this particular title is that no matter how hard I try, I can't come up with a suitable piece of witty wordplay that would be more entertaining than a straightforward description.

What we have here is simply a 2D platform game with puzzle elements. You might say that it is similar to Braid, but I can't say for sure since that game doesn't appeal...

Agarest: Generations of War - Weapons of Mass Distraction.

It is a fascinating SRPG. The mechanics are quite clever in some ways. For example, by careful positioning of your team you can set up elaborate combination attacks. That is a feature I've seen before, but it is cleverly implemented, as are many other aspects of the battle system. There are a vast number of skills available in the game, both physical and magical. You can 'overkill' an enemy to make it drop better items. There are dozens of characters available. Lots of nice little touches keep...

Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned - Men With Big Shiny Choppers.

Posted February 4th, 2010 at 03:58 AM by Soluzar (Soluzar's Gaming Journal)

You could say that my experience with the first of the Episodes From Liberty City has been a distinctly mixed bag. Allow me to start by reminding everyone that even though it is widely disliked, I greatly enjoyed Grand Theft Auto IV and as such I was greatly anticipating these episodes. I decided to wait for the version available as a stand-alone disc because it represents significantly better value for money than the downloadable versions.

Although this post is nominally a first...
