Soluzar's Gaming Journal

I'm going to use this space to comment on anything I find noteworthy, interesting or amusing about the games I'm playing recently. I don't necessarily assume it will be an interesting read for anyone else, but it might well be an interesting record for me.

The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom - The Time Travelling Pie Thief

Posted February 17th, 2010 at 08:47 AM by Soluzar (Soluzar's Gaming Journal)

If you'll pardon the somewhat pedestrian title of today's blog entry, I have a rather fascinating game on my hands today. The thing about this particular title is that no matter how hard I try, I can't come up with a suitable piece of witty wordplay that would be more entertaining than a straightforward description.

What we have here is simply a 2D platform game with puzzle elements. You might say that it is similar to Braid, but I can't say for sure since that game doesn't appeal...

Super Mario 64 DS - It's Four Times As Heroic, And Just As Peachy!

Posted May 23rd, 2009 at 10:22 AM by Soluzar (Soluzar's Gaming Journal)

Like probably most gamers who were old enough to hold a controller in 1997, I've beaten Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64 console. I had some serious doubts about this port for the DS, mostly due to the lack of true analogue control. With that said, it still plays quite reasonably, and does justice to the great original.

There's a fair bit of added content in this version. There are now four heroes to choose from. Yoshi, Mario, Luigi and Wario may all come under the player's control,...

LittleBigPlanet: A Tale Of Two Sackboys

Posted May 4th, 2009 at 02:57 PM by Soluzar (Soluzar's Gaming Journal)

I'm not sure just how long it would have taken me to beat Little Big Planet on my own, but I didn't have to find out, because once again I was able to play co-op with forum member Tom Servo. It is just so much faster and more fun to play this game with a partner. Even though I've beaten the game now, I'll certainly play again, just for the sheer pleasure of the co-op experience.

The last few levels were truly epic in scale, and they were beautifully designed. There was one level where...

LittleBigPlanet: Two Sacks Are Better Than One.

Posted April 30th, 2009 at 12:00 PM by Soluzar (Soluzar's Gaming Journal)

I've owned LittleBigPlanet since it came out, more or less. Considering that I own a PS3, and big exclusive releases for that platform have been somewhat hard to come by, I'm always willing to consider each one that appears.

At first I was charmed by the sheer attention to detail in each level, not to mention the wealth of customisation. I finished the first three areas fairly quickly, but when I had some trouble completing a level in the next area I soon put the game down and forgot...

Ratchet & Clank 2: It Starts To Chafe After A While

Posted April 26th, 2009 at 06:57 AM by Soluzar (Soluzar's Gaming Journal)

Going Commando that is.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone, but still... I can't deny that at least for me it felt at one point as though it was in danger of outstaying its welcome. You see, there was one point at which I was unable to progress, as I've previously blogged.

The only solution I could find was to get better equipment, which meant grinding for bolts. It turned out that what makes the biggest difference on Planet...
