Tribes 2: best first-person shooter you don't know

Tribes 2 is an online super fun futuristic team-based first-person shooter from 2001 with super awesome jetpacks.

No CD-key, no nothing, just download, install, patch, make an account and go go go.
Why don't more people play this game? It is so godly. Wait... flying through the air at 200 miles an hour while raining death on everything below doesn't sound fun at all. Let's all be slow land mammals and play CS: Source or Halo instead!
I reinstalled this week and I'm playing on the "Goon Haven" server. If you decide to play just leave a comment so we can meet up. I could show you the ropes and stuff!
Misc. remarks
I could write a lot more about features and franchise history, but basically:
(1) this game has a lot of good ideas I'm still waiting to see show up in newer shooters.
(2) Starsiege: Tribes is the first game in the series.
Match example
"Skiing" down hills to gain speed in tribes started out as an exploit and was integrated into later games which I think is just hilarious (just like if they had made bunny hopping the "standard" way of moving around in CS: Source). The script exploit made you jump several times per second when you pressed the space bar.
(3) Tribes 2 had bad marketing and the developer went under soon after release. Halo won GOTY instead ;_;
This series has generally been plagued with bad marketing/small player base. Is it too hard to play or something?
(4) I didn't like Tribes: Vengeance (sequel by Irrational Games from 2004). The maps and the physics were "off". Unreal with jetpacks.

I don't know?
I played that game when it first came out. It wasn't my main game (more focused on competitive Ut99, and I was casually lvling up my game in CS1.3), but I got into it by a friend, and I was shocked how good it was. I know Gibb is gonna kill me if he heard that, but I never played Tribes 1. It was a little before I got my first PC.
That game took some skill. Flying that damn gunship was so damn hard with out that Tribes mouse mod that lets you tweak the sensitivity better. So many good things to say about the game. They don't make grand scale games like these like they used to.
With consoles dominating the market these days, we get nothing but watered down ideas with little to no innovation. Once in a blue moon some good stuff comes out, but since people only stick to "whats safe" these games become instant failures, and people think twice about taking risks. The industry has hit the plateau, and it's gonna need something revolutionary to get back on track.
**** graphics man, we need more fast paced games like Tribes, Quake world, Quake 3, CPMA, Painkiller, Warsow, and any other game that requires skill, and not hand holding aim assist.Posted June 21st, 2009 at 11:09 PM by lav2k4

I was hoping someone would reply saying they knew all about tribes
Hm yes I agree with your comment. I was watching someone stream "the conduit" earlier which is a new shooter that just came out for the wii and it had... nothing going for it. I mean I don't want them to reinvent to wheel every time a new game comes out but I'm not going to play another "run around with a rifle and shoot bad guys" game.
Right now I'm thinking of getting TF2 just because it has more servers to play on and you can switch roles just like in tribes. Except with no flying around at 300 kph
I didn't play tribes 1 or online UT because I had no 3D graphics card or high-speed internet until 2001. (although T1 apparently works well enough with a 56k modem). I did play a ton of wacky UT mutators and mods offline though hahah.Posted June 24th, 2009 at 07:24 PM by Victory
