Mini-contest?

Ok so I had the impulse to do a mini-contest. It's a bit silly but I had the impulse. I actually know exactly what it would be.

So I started looking around on DA to see what kinds of prizes were generally being offered for these things and

holy **** these people are cheapasses

A 3 month premium membership? What? That's $7.95. I was thinking a year was being pretty cheap. 3 months?

Another one had 300 points as the first place prize. What? That's $3.75. You can barely get a happy meal for that much.

I was thinking

4,000 points + year premium membership for first place
2,000 points + 3 month membership for second
2,000 points for third

I was also thinking that was maybe a bit cheap.

Hell, Old Hat, I don't think it really matters what you start out with. People ALWAYS join up to contribute -- just let everyone know if they want to donate a prize you'll give them...I don't know...a llama or something. Then you'll be racking up them prizes before you know it.

The contest I'm currently hosting on DA started out with a three month membership and I think...200 points? Something like that. Oh, and a drawing, whatever. Before I could blink I had people coming out of the woodwork to donate prizes. Now I have a TON of stuff to give away.

People donate prizes to other people's mini-contests? Really?

    Oh yeah, totally.

Let's see...I have eleven donators to all three of my prize slots for the contest I'm currently running. And three volunteer judges.

The way I do it is -- list prizes that YOU are offering, then make a note saying you are open to donations underneath. Let them know you'll credit them and give them something in return...I usually go with llamas since they are free. Good motivational tool, that.

Also, make sure you advertise your contest in the various groups that support them. BEST WAY to get more exposure. http://contest-crazy.deviantart.com/

You have to join the group in order to post to their galleries, but if you unwatch their deviations you really aren't bothered much. You can always leave the group after the contest is over .
