Hey guys i know its been a while since i've been on here but i have a so much on my plate when it comes to the game of life as of late. lol
Anyways i just wanted to bring up a quick story i just read about on ANN today:
Sanrio Sues Oklahoma Beauty Pageant for Copyright Infringement
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/inte...t-infringement
Anyways you read the headline and from what i read in this story they are suing them because of custom made trophies and tiaras with the hello kitty image. These trophies and tiaras were for a kids beauty pageant.
Sanrio...the same company that i enjoyed the old school Unico animations growing now sueing a kids beauty pagant over hello kitty images.
Come on Sanrio really? I understand you guys need to make money but did you really have to do this and even go as far as taking away trophies from kids...boy thats just sad.

Seems like a pretty cut-and-dried example of copyright infringement to me. Assuming the ANN article to be factually accurate (which... yeah, I know... just assume for the sake of argument), then the defendant had foreknowledge and proceeded forward with intent.
If those are the actual facts, then I'd expect Sanrio to get the full damages awarded to them.
I certainly hope full damages are awarded, because anything that can be done to shut down child beauty pageants is a good thing.Posted August 21st, 2012 at 03:58 PM by Leader Desslock

It's a beauty pageant for children, it'd be more accurate to say "Take away trophies from parents who whore their children." Too bad we can't sue them was pretty much my thought.
Edit: Why does everyone keep saying ANN is not reliable, did they do something in the past I'm not aware of or something?Posted August 21st, 2012 at 09:26 PM by Arch-Defender

Some of us find ANN's journalistic standards to be a tad... lacking.
In terms of the kind of "Company X released Title today" news, they're decent enough. Beyond that, they have a tendency to confuse editorializing with reporting, which makes them just about reliable a news source as the Huffington Post.
That wouldn't be bad if the anime fanbase dismissed their 'news' as 'some guys ranting on a blog', but unfortunately there are folks in the fandom who take ANN's word as gospel without feeding through any sort of Critical Thinking Filter. "Oh, they reported it on ANN, it must be true, right?"
It's on those issues where the anime fanbase could use a definitive voice of objective reason that ANN's reporting standards dip the lowest. It would be wonderful if their journalistic stance was "Regardless of what you might feel, these are the facts." The anime fanbase would actually benefit from that. They'd be able to call themselves the Anime News Network without putting that second word in finger quotes.
But that ain't who they are, and it ain't who they're apt to become. And so the finger quotes remain.
They've got a good encyclopedia for looking up who voiced a given role, or when a series was released. Beyond that, the whole site's not worth the powder it'd take to blow their servers to hell.
Of course, that's just my opinion. I may be wrong.Posted August 21st, 2012 at 09:52 PM by Leader Desslock

well lol no matter what I mean if you can't trust the news for your information then who can you trust. lol
Although I don't disagree there are some sources that can mislead on a story.
But about this story though if it does turn out to be true the way it was reported its just sad.Going after a kids beauty pageant!? Surely they could be going after real offenders trying to steal there product.
It reminds me of what happened a few years ago when the New Orleans Saints we're going to the Super Bowl.
They didn't have a problem with fans wearing " Who Dat" shirts..but then all of a sudden when there going to the super bowl the NFL and mostly the Saints sports origination
starts crying foul over fans wearing unlicensed NFL clothing to saints games because there not getting money over "Who Dat" royalties. In the end the people won because snubbing your own fans..isn't a good idea to try to tamper with.
Some things just can't be owned by a company..some things just can't be owned by anyone at all.
Like a idea shared or fans just trying to support something they truly love. Some things are just simply intangible .Posted September 3rd, 2012 at 01:51 PM by waltsoph3

You can trust the news for information, so long as you choose reputable news sources and think critically about the bias in that source of information.
You might want to try that once before you die, Walt - just for the sheer novelty of it.
However, I was amused by this little nugget of yours:
"Some things just can't be owned by a company."
The "Hello Kitty" brand/name/icon is one of those things that most certainly can be owned. Trademarked, in fact.
If it didn't have value, the pageant would not have willfully used it.
As I said, this is a pretty unambiguous case.Posted September 3rd, 2012 at 02:18 PM by Leader Desslock
