100 Days of Anime: Okami and Her 7 Companions

Posted April 22nd, 2012 at 07:14 PM by goddessofanime

It took me awhile to finish this, but I finished this cute reboot of fairy tales today. It's okay and surprisingly better than I thought, but I felt like there could've been more and ended on a note that screamed, 'Yeah, we know this show bombed so here's a nice ending'.

Ryoko is a tsundere who beats sh*t up. Ringo is her companion and in the sense of the story, the Red Riding Hood Character. Ryoko is the Wolf (hence the name Okami). One day, after a fight, Ryoko and Ringo meet a guy named Ryoishi who confesses his mad love to Ryoko....but the guy's basically a wimp who freaks if one stares at him for too long. In order to grow closer to Ryoko, however, he joins the group that Ryoko and Ringo are both involved in, the Otogi Bank, which does favors for people basically.

The Otogi gang are typical characters that you find in other series: the president is rich and has a way to get out of everything, his cousin is his aide, there's a maid character, a sciencist, a player and his adoring fangirl who whups his arse anytime another female looks at him along with Ryoko, Ringo and Ryoishi. It's mostly standalone stories until it gets near the end, with what promises to be a backstory for Ryoko....

The class president of Otogi's rival school and Ryoko apparently have a history together...enough to where Ryoko's scared of him and the president basically has all of the Bank gang trolled and kidnapped. But nothing really is resolved...

Thanks to the help of a kid that looks like a cat, Ryoishi learns to fight and gains his resolve to protect Ryoko no matter what. Of course Ryoko falls for him by series end but in the grand tradition of flat-chested tsunderes everywhere, she's all ><

Anyway, I really liked the character designs and it's a pleasant enough watch. I bought the LE version, but this is probaly a title you can save money on by either streaming it on Funi's site or wait and see if Funi adds this title to their S.A.V.E collection.
