I'll try doing comics again.
Decompressed storytelling and a reviewer's dilemma
I have run into a little problem I didn't really anticipate. The handful that read my blog may have noticed my habit of talking about limited series that have completed publication. I haven't done any onging titles or any of the new DC titles.
Why? I have been thinking about decompressed storytelling. It's difficult to say much definite about a title without a complete storyline to look at. With decompressed storytelling, a complete storyline is 5-7 issues. The new DC titles have, at most, 2 issues out. It will be months before a complete storyline is available to read.
On the other hand, by then the title will be old news and back issues may already be difficult to get. Some of the first issues of the new DC titles are difficult to find already. It will be about time for the first trade volume to come out.
So do I review #1 when it comes out and perhaps do a premature review or wait until the first storyline is out and risk reviewing a title that is old news and now hard to get in individual issues?
