Where do the devil fruit come from? Why do they give people (and the occasional animal) these odd powers? Are there ever repeats? Multiples of a single devil fruit? Do some have more 'mojo' (whatever grants the ability) in them than others and grant a greater degree of ability?

Where do the devil fruit come from?

Oda has never mentioned were they come from just that they turn up on the Grand Line

Why do they give people (and the occasional animal) these odd powers?

Some are incidental like Luffy or Chopper (they ate it without knowing what it was). Most people eat them to become more powerful.

No, only one of any fruit is available at the time. You also can't eat 2 fruits or you will "explode". (Oda's words)

Do some have more 'mojo' (whatever grants the ability) in them than others and grant a greater degree of ability?

There are 3 types:

Logia which are elemental and grant intangibility, and invunerability to most physical attacks. Generally the most powerful of the three Ace, Crocodile, Eneru, Admirals Akainu and Kizaru all have them.

Paramecia which make the eaters body like the material it represents Luffy (rubber), Mr 3 (Wax), it can also be more obtuse like Mr 2 Bon Clay who has the ability to clone so he can impersonate anyone he touches and Perona has a summon ghost ability she can also make them into bombs.

Zoan are animal fruits you eat X fruit you become X animal.

With regard to Zoan...

There can be more than one "model" of a given type of Zoan fruit.. For example, a fruit that makes the user like a feline would be the "Neko-Neko no Mi", the Cat Fruit. There can be "Cat Fruit: Model Jaguar" and "Cat Fruit: Model Tiger" existing at the same time, but not two Tiger fruit.

I love how Zoan users are looked down on One Piece. Every time a Zoan user reveals their power, you can just see this sigh of relief which is accompanied by "Oh, you're a Zoan type. Whew." You can see the tension break.

Although that changed a bit after Enies Lobby and the CP9 members

That's why people eat them. I meant why do they give people odd powers? Now 'why did Luffy tea it?' but 'Why did it make him a rubber man?'

Is there some sort of explanation or is it just phlebotinum? He does sometimes throw out sme sort of explanation for stuff like the explanation for the knock up current and similar things.

They have a little demon in each fruit that grants the eater a power hence the name Devil Fruit. It is explained the sea devil puts them in the fruit but hates anyone who eats them hence they weaken and drown if submerged in sea water.

It is a very clever narrative trick for Oda to introduce an ability without having to dedicate a long story about how a special power works. Dragonball, Bleach, Naruto, Hunter X Hunter all have to waste time explaining how X ability works. One Piece it is simply X ate the YY fruit and now is a Y man and can do Y.

Ahh...anime and math problems. The best way to learn something.

I'd like to see one that allows/forces you to breathe under water. The irony with the sinking thing would be a nice touch. Maybe a whole underwater city.

No it would destroy the whole point of a cursed fruit.

That has nothing at all to do with this. A setting can bear very little resemblance to the real world but still have its own, internal logic. The explanation for how the dials work and what they do is, in real world terms, a lot of blather but One Piece isn't set in the real world. In that fictional world, they exist and work a certain way. I can still suspend disbelief if what people are doing with dials makes sense in terms of how Oda explained them even though they are really just applied phlebotinum.

I learned early on in any anime movie or series to just accept what is going on and run with it if I like what is going on. An answer to a question is nice, but when you don't see an answer in sight, just say '**** it, what happens next?'

It makes it easier for me to suspend disbelief if the setting has internal consistency. I don't mind a handwavium explanation or the old 'it's magic' or 'a wizard did it' explanations but inconsistency and logical incoherence bug me.

You missed the recently revealed subsections of Zoan fruits, namely Prehistoric and Mythic variants. Far from being relieved, if Kizaru wasn't so awesome that he couldn't show emotion, he'd probably have been ******** himself when Marco revealed his power.

As for where they come from, I believe it was briefly mentioned that Dr. Vegapunk had discovered their origins, didn't he?

They come from a tree, and when the person who consumed a certain fruit dies it grows it again.
