View Full Version : Ear Gauging

Thoughts on it? Do any of you members have gauged ears?

I do actually have gauged ears. At 2, but don't plan to go above a 0, which is the next step up. Its somewhat of a fad here at Evergreen, but I do like the way some look. Just like tattoos or any other form of body modification, its pretty addicting. Some people have ones that go above an 1" gauge, and in most cases, it looks hideous. Little much right?

One of my female cousins did it to the point I thought it was a pair of big hoop earrings when I saw her at thanksgiving. It was gross when I realized it was her earlobes.

^ I actually had the same experience. There was a girl on the bus who had her ears gauged to the point where it was about 2 inches in d. It...yeah, it was creepy.

I suppose that if a person didn't have any hooks mounted on the walls of their home, and they were getting dressed, and they didn't want their clothes to get dirty on the floor, then maybe they could hang their clothes on a hangar through their gauged ear.

Other than that, I can't see the appeal.

Ouch Dessy, that one hurt.

^ Well, you wouldn't want to hang a whole suit. I can see where that might hurt a lot. But a shirt? A human earlobe can take that much weight, I'd think.

Not that I'd try it personally, mind you.

most people won't say anything about but it feels good and makes the area more sensitive to sensual touches. That's not true for everyone, but it's a pro on the pro's and con's list.

I'm not piercing my ears period, I like contact sports to much.

Personally I'd never do it and I find the whole idea a little ... icky?

I don't know, I mean, you're going to have big holes in your ears for the rest of your life.

VidelCoolGirl

I think its this. Whether or not its an act of rebellion, especially for women; doing or not doing things based only on if you'll be hot or not is irritating. "Oh, I can't do A because the guys wont think I'm hot." Seriously, if thats the one thing that someone can't see past, then thats a little bothersome.

Besides, most gauges people see are the extreme. Most don't go above 4 to 0G, which heals back down to a 10 or smaller size (unless you look REAL close) after a while.

I personally don't see how its any different from tattoos.

I don't mind gauges. I actually like them... if they aren't too large and gaping.

Extreme body modification can be a bit off putting (duh).

as for gauging ears, i've done it before but i never went past a 10 and mine always healed right back up and they never looked bad when i took them out. i don't think going much lower though would have been a good idea. it just looks wierd. it'd be ok if we were in a culture where it had some sort of meaning but it's just a fad...

I don't care one way or the other whether a person (male or female) chooses to get them. If it floats your boat, go for it; if you think it's gross, don't. It's not my body, so I've got no say in the matter.

I simply don't find them appealing in any way, shape or form. I don't think they're attractive, I don't think they look 'cool', I don't think they're badass - I don't think they're much of anything except a washer to get caught on branches when you're running from moose in the deep woods.

That, to me, is just a little silly. Other people see 'em differently. So be it.

I personally don't see how its any different from tattoos.
I can't say that I care for 90% of the tattoos I've seen, either. There's a whole lot of badly drawn, stupid and silly ink out there.

Personally they kind of freak me out. But then again, regular piercings do, too.

I've never had my ears pierced because when it comes to pain, I'd rather not. Sometimes it looks really nice, and sometimes I do feel left out when I go shopping and happen to stop by the jewelry counter (who doesn't?), but no thanks. Not for me.

I think gauged ears look good on some individuals, but not so hot on others.

I have an industrial piercing on my left ear that I am proud of. The thing that really sucks about it is that there is a huge keloid on the top that I am having a rough time getting rid of. But still, I am proud of myself for getting it. I'm a major wuss when it comes to needs and this piercing contained a hold that was far bigger than any needle I've had.

I can't say I'd be brave enough for gauging. I heard the beginning process for it is quite painful.

Gauging isn't painful at all, you just slowly stretch out your ears. Granted, I never waited and I pushed an 8 through a 16 hole and bled all over my sink.

1) Naw, Gauging doesn't hurt at all if you do it right. You're supposed to wait forever between each size, so aside from a tiny bit of soreness, its just fine. Matters on your pain tolerance really.

Nah I prefer bare flesh tattoos are too pretentious.

look at points 1 and 10:

http://www.wanderings.net/notebook/Main/PenisFacts

I've read studies to back this up, that link was just an enjoyable read I came across on google, not a primary source.

There are two types of penises. One kind expands and lengthens when becoming erect (a grower). The other appears big most of the time, but doesn't get much bigger after achieving erection (a shower).

maybe I should start a penis thread, there are lots of non-std related health issues w/ penises (circumcised and uncircumcised) that go unspoken about!!!

I like tattoos too, but unlike tats, if you go only to size 0 for gauges, they can heal back and its unnoticeable. Tats stay forever.

You're going to get pierced at 0? Man, thats going to hurt. Good luck. I don't see whats really working up, since 00 is the next step after 0. You're just going to have to wait like, three months, mattering on how well you heal and pain tolerance to move up to 00. If I were you, I'd get pierced at 4. Better to start off small in case you second-guess yourself and regret it.

I've seen some crazy ear gauging before, like this dude stuck Ivory horns through his ears, it was badass but so totally weird.

And then I saw this documentary of this nomadic tribe on the discovery channel, they made these long ivory tusks and the gauged out the soft spot in their lower jaw so it looked like a piece of bone protruding out of their face. I'll never think badly about piercings ever again...

I've discovered that I've no nerve endings in my lobes for some odd reason thanks to getting them initially pierced two months ago, so I figured I would go big.

In all seriousness, I'm going to start at 6 and go bigger during the next year especially since I'll be wearing plugs instead of tunnels.

This definitely isn't something I'd want to go for personally. One thing I don't understand though... why do the sizes work in reverse order with 0 being almost the largest numbered size? I know there are both 00 and 000 sizes, but still... seems odd. What do you ask for if you want to go a step up from 000? Or is that the biggest anyone would ever go.

Word of advice:

1) Make sure you use only steel during the initial gauging process. I learned the hard way with gauging with acrylic for 2G. I have to buy tapers today when I go to Buffalo.

2) Don't gauge with plugs right away. Usually, plugs are for already gauged ears. Tusks or tapers are the best. You can get good ones at Spencers (since they're generally cheaper for steel than Hot Topic) or go online. I suggest http://www.kingsbodyjewelry.com or http://www.bodymodern.com . Gauges are ALWAYS cheaper online.

3) If you're putting them in yourself, and you find its a little tougher to get them back in after cleaning, Olive Oil is both good for you, and helps it go in easier. Don't clean it too much. You wan't to leave the gauges in there, and not take them out until you're fully healed. One of my gauges fell out for a couple of hours last night, and I swear, it closed up almost.

Gauges are measured in millimeters. After 00, it goes 7/16, 1/2, 9,16, and so on. You can go as far as you want. Way past an inch. Those sizes are usually in extreme cases.

Also:

1) Remember, nobody's ears are alike. If it hurts to much when you put them in, don't force it. You can tear the skin around the ear, and have a blowout. Ears are going to be sore for a couple hours after you put the gauge in, but based off what you have ( Tapers or curved tapers are best for this ), if it hurts too much, you can inch it in a little at a time. Don't wait too long though to put the whole thing in. Its easier to just do it all at once.

2) You can probably put tunnels or pugs in, but let tapers hang out in your ear for half-a-day to a day and then push the taper out with the plug/tunnel to put them in. I have flesh tunnels I want to put in, but I have to wait for tapers. Sucks.

3) The ear is not supposed to bleed, but if it does a little, bactine or neosporin clears it right up. You might get crusties on the ear, but mild soap and water fixes that. Make sure you get all the soap off too. Your ear can get irritated like that.

4) Before you put them in, take a hot shower and massage the ear. That makes the ear a bit more stretchy and easier to put the gauge in.

5) Skipping sizes is not recommended for people who have never had their ears pierced before to skip sizes. I had my ears pierced for years before I gauged, so they were already pretty stretchy. If you can handle it, then its up to you, but you don't want to get a blowout, and skipping is suggested only for early sizes like 10-8, 12,8, ect. Skipping sizes such as 8 to 2 is a HUGE jump. You'll screw up your ears.

6) Remember. The smaller the number, the bigger the gauge is. Mattering how fast you heal, wait a couple weeks to two months before moving up a size. I can usually move up about every two to three weeks. Everyone is different. Just because you have no nerves in your ear, doesn't mean you can't hurt them.

If you're going to get gauged right off the bat (without a previous piercing), get it done at a shop, by a professional. They can do gauges at any size, but its going to hurt is all.

Well, its only a last resort? I usually get my stuff online because its way cheaper, but if you need a quick taper, or change of look, its better than paying $60 for the same thing at Metro.
