View Full Version : People at my job think I'm jewish??

Apparently some people at my job seriously believed that over the span of the 11 months that they've known me, they seriously believed this whole time I'm jewish.

I've never verbally stated I'm jewish, in fact I've very vocally described that I'm mostly ethnically basque and irish.

My last name doesn't even remotely sound jewish. O_o''

Yet on a call night right before my vacations started a doctor and a fellow intern were heavily surprised I wasn't jewish. Another attending a while back said he always thought I was jewish even though I never specifically stated that at all because he says my face just looks.. jewish. One of the doctors said the prominent cheeckbones and apparently large nose are the culprits. Nobody has ever told me I had a large nose. :O

My university has tons of multimilionaire jewish students and they immediately know I'm not jewish.

Has anyone out there been confused like that?

Yes. For a Mexican.

The old man was surprised and awed that I could both speak AND write in English. When I looked at him like he was nuts he went on to sputter things like, 'well, when you people cross the boarder you usually don't even know how to do one...let alone both' and 'can you read English, too?'

I've never been more insulted in all my life. He was sincerely impressed.

Well, when you see pork on sale do you stop to ponder the moral dilemma?

My brother had a teacher that thought for a while that my siblings and I where all recent immigrants and didn't speak English.

I've been a suspected Hawaiian, a Canadian Eskimo, Filipino, and Thai, before. -_-;

Genetically, I'm actually English-Chinese. So, er, hum, yeah.

I used to get people asking me that kind of thing a lot when I was in my early 20s. Really direct, really specific presumed ethnicity. It was weird.

Nowadays, it's usually more a case of people gingerly asking "if you don't mind be asking, where...?" rather than randomly guessing.

I get the opposite, it's constantly assumed that I'm NOT jewish, and I'm told jokes and some pretty terribly anti-semitic stories and jokes when I actually am.

not that I care what other people think to begin with, so I let them tell their story or joke and move along.

You should tell them that you're Jewish just to see how they react.

that would create an awkward situation, I tend to try and avoid those with people I don't care about....but it would be funny to try it once with someone I knew I disliked.

@sailornyanko: No, that's never happened to me. As for mistaking other people, there was a person I worked with this semester and I didn't know he was an exchange student from France. Same thing with my lab partner last semester. (until it came up in conversation that is)

We have tons of students from all over the world at school so ethnicity is less important than if the student population was less diverse like it used to be. They have the old graduation pics from the fifties still up and it's all white guys. ><

f2akid

I actually get mistaken with nearly every new person I meet. It's mostly certain European ethnicities I get mistaken for such as Spanish (people in Spain thought I was one of them which was awkward at times and beneficial at others), Italian, some Mediterranean countries and just about every country in the Middle-East. On rare occasions Brits mistake me for a Brit as well. I've never taken offence to it though, it really amuses me that my ethnic origin can be so ambiguous and I do take advantage and lie about it on occasion for one reason or another.

I can think of plenty of times when someone in or outside work approached me talking a language I don't understand or asking if I'm from a certain country, very awkward situation to react to as I don't want to seem rude or unapproachable. But I've never been mistaken for a Jew, although I do have some Jewish features.

I was also literally chased down by a employee at a casino....the women literally grabbed my shoulder, and said {10-4 I got him} into her walky talky before asking me for my I.D. when I was 24 in Mohegan Sun.

A Mexican would likely be ethnically mestizo or possibly full Native American... I think.

I don't think a Mexican has to be dark skinned. I think you'd call the skin tone, "olive." There are probably lighter skinned Mexicans. Either way, there is no reason why anyone should think Shiroi would be Mexican. I was making fun of that.

Just to clarify, this is genuine confusion on my part. I thought that to be a Mexican was to be dark skinned, just like to be African or Caribbean is to be dark skinned, albeit with a difference in the specific range of skin tones. I think you're referring to ethnicity here because one doesn't have to be white-skinned to be British for example. Just pointing that out since it's easy to confuse nationality, ethnicity, what have you.

Second of all I don't think the man in the story was exactly an anthropology expert... who knows what he was talking about. To throw in a funny anecdote, when I went to get vaccinated against the flu one of the people in charge peered at my dad (who had gone with me) and said "do you speak french?" Even though we were speaking to each other like 10 seconds earlier. Yeah. Some people's brains go into THIS PERSON LOOKS DIFFERENT! FOREIGNER ALERT! mode I believe.

And third of all there are white Mexicans who have been in mexico for a long time
see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_mexican

Now whether that qualifies as being 'ethnically mexican' is a matter of debate. How many centuries do you have to be somewhere to become 'ethnic'?
Most people only hang around alive for a century anyways...
I'm not even sure what ethnicity I am since that would imply looking up my family tree and that's really really boring. This thread made me think of some Japanese folks who like how they can trace back their family to the 6th, 7th, 8th century. OK, cool? What do I care? Bit of an off-topic rant already but what I'm getting at is that culture matters more than dna.

@sailornyanko

This just tells me that people generally stereotype others based on what they see on the outside. I dont know you at all so I wont assume what your ethnicity is unless you talk about it. Though im sure most of it is not intentional or meant to be offensive, I think people just assume of others by the way they look or act. I've been mistaken for just about everything from thai, cambodian, laos, chinese, japanese, hawaiian, and everything else asian or pacific islander other than my true ethnicity. I think most of us can relate to that.

Now if they treat you unfairly due to the fact that they are assuming of your ethnicity is something entirely different and deserves some civil action of some sort.

That director Guillermo del Toro is mexican and has blue eyes. It's far more common than you think to find white complexed mexicans in the north of the country. The more south you go, the less common. It's insanely weird to be black people in Mexico, most of them are tourists or employees from foreign multinational companies.

I however am probably the pastiest white employee at my hospital. Perhaps it's a small hospital (just 1 floor and at most only 200 beds which isn't much), but still.. I freaking stand out. Green eyes obviously stand out as well. There has been in the long past very few jewish students from my university that have done their internship here, but it's usually the ones with really bad grades that don't work well at all. Most people at my job assumed I'm just some gringa (it's funny to tell people I'm actually lawfully mexican because they never believe me or joke about wanting to deport me).

I've had patients tell me they think I'm either German, French and one lady seriously mistook me for a Chilean! I really do make the place more "diverse". :smokin:

you'd be surprised.

Took the words right out my mouth. There are many many girls out there who would do crazy **** for/to a guy just because he's famous. Just ask Eminem.

Maybe woman do like you but are afraid to say anything ^_^.

I was thinking this as well. I've seen the pics Mirkz posted and I too am surprised girls don't approach him at random. So that just leaves something being done wrong on his part. No offence intended Mirkz.

Just look at Tiger Woods...

But I'm really more of less talking about the guys who look like a famous celebrity not that they really are famous.

that is the nature of the beast.

it's like when a woman does Magazine window shopping and she likes every guy in the magazine, and with some coincidence there is a guy who looks like those guys living down the street.

None taken :)
Don't know what I'd be doing wrong, maybe frowning a lot ?
Perhaps not picking up on signals( really bad for that).
Either I don't get out enough, or women here are different to the women wherever you're from :)

On topic - had a mate say me and another guy I've ridden with a couple times look similar. Think he was messing about though.

On a more on-topic note, today some old guy kept insisting I lived in an adjacent town and graduated at a different school than what I truly did. He's like, 'no -- I know you are really Heather. I mean, you look EXACTLY like her and everything.' even though my name tag was clearly in sight.

He went on to say I grew up with his kids, so he was sure. I told him I lived in Madison Heights until about seven years ago. He told me FLAT OUT that I was mistaken. I....I mean what?

:smokin:

Green eyes huh? Got proof of that? :D

Considering his total insistence it is a good job he didn't mistake you for his girlfriend. That could have ended badly.

This could be slightly off topic, but...

From what I have heard from some foreigners a lot of people in other countries think that all black people are rappers or gangstas, since they have none in their country or have never seen one, and all they know is from the American media.

I've been mistaken for many things. I have a lot of mixture. It's funny when I can tell that someone is trying to figure out what I'm..like it really matters. I have a german name, but don't look german. I've been mistaken for different hispanic nationalities, filipino, black, white, middle eastern, indian, and carribean.

I think you are thinking of me, though you didn't get the name right because the exclamation is part of my name. I am not "disappoint" for a few reasons. First I was aware that he wasn't Korean. Secondly even if he was Korean, I am only interested in Korean women. Finally he named himself for Kim Jae Hoon which is pretty awesome in itself.

We should have a Hari! and a Hare! just for good measure. Hari! would have to be a girl though because it just sounds feminine, and Hare! should be a... um, rabbit?
