View Full Version : Thoughts on Unircorn previews

I just got around to watching the Unicorn previews, and my first thought is...
That I like the animation style. It looks quality, and all the characters look different, not just cookie cutter generics with different hair and eyes. That's a big plus to me.
From reading up more on it, I see they got Furuhashi, the Zipang director. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do at the Gundam helm.
Also the mecha designer line up looks good.
The only thing that could make me happier is if I heard there was going to be some Haruhiko Mikimoto Characters (like 0080) and a 'Kill em all' Tomino tragic ending. Now that I think about it, they should just let me choose the next Gundam project team... :P Joking aside, I have really high hopes for Unicorn, I hope I'm not disappointed this time. I mean it's UC, it better be frickin' outstanding.

Considering the fact I have not liked a Gundam show since Turn A came out, I am jaded about it.

Wow, it looks like my old Gundam forum doesn't have all the die hard posters it used to... I guess I can partly blame that on the lack luster Gundam of recent years. Then again, it may be I'm just becomming an elitist of sorts...
Unicorn, you better be good! I'm raising my fist in anger here!

I'm looking forward to it, but I don't really have much to say about it, trailers have looked good though. Gundam is Gundam, the fact that it's the first new UC animation in years means nothing to me since I like UC stuff as much as most of the AU series (I appear to be one of the few that enjoyed both SEED and Gundam 00).
I think it'll be a nice Gundam year though, between the Unicorn OVA (Which I've heard is a worldwide release) and the Gundam 00 Movie (Not many details, but I like some of the new Gundams). I'll be happy if there's a new TV series by the end of 2010.

I really need to catch up with what happend after 0079 before I watch this series, I'm just not sure of what it is I need to watch.

In technical UC Chronological order:
Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: The War in the Pocket
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: STARDUST MEMORY or The Last Blitz of Zeon
Mobile Suit Z Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack
... but really, you might just need a very general knowledge of the UC timeline as the novels feature relatively new characters and will probably self reference events "in the past" either with how they are important to the story or just in passing.
Considering the fact I have not liked a Gundam show since Turn A came out, I am jaded about it.
I kinda fall in line with this sentiment, though not 100% exactly. The demographics of mecha fandom have changed so that a gritty, 1980s styled hard/real robot show is harder to come by. What I hope is that the styling, artistically and story-thematically, resembles products of the late 1980s or early 1990s. Browsing over the Wiki article on it, it looks like Katoki Hajime is leading the mecha design roster and while the characters were all originally designed by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko but the animation character design is done by Takahashi Kumiko. It's okay, I didn't know who she was either. Her key animation credits look alright but her most notable character design credits are Urusei Yatsura 6, Card Captor Sakura, Witch Hunter Robin and Ouran High School Host Club.
I want this to be good ... I want this to be good ... I want this to be good ...

Zeta Gundam (UC0087, TV Series 50 Episodes), ZZ Gundam (UC0088, TV Series 47 Episodes) and the movie Char's Counterattack (UC0093, Movie) take place between 0079 and Gundam UC. There is also the 3 OVAs, The 08th MS Team (OVA, 12 Episodes), 0080: War in the Pocket (OVA, 6 Episodes) , and 0083: Stardust Memory (OVA, 13 Episodes).
I'm going to assume Zeta and Char's Counterattack are basic prerequisites, but to be honest I haven't read any of the Gundam UC novels
EDIT: Looks like Suiko Eiji beat me to it -_-;

The fact that its based on something and not Sunrise just creating a new show in the UC time line does comfort me. If it was a a new UC series just planned by Sunrise, well that would be cause for alarm. Sunrise doesn't seem to actually know how to make shows these days.

Have you seen the Gundam Ecole Du Ciel manga put out by Tokyo Pop? Unfortunately, they stopped publishing them, but it's an excellent manga. It takes place around 0085 and leads up to Zeta.

1. Gundam UC's character designs are by Yoshihiko Yoshikazu, the character designer of the original Mobile Suit Gundam. It doesn't get better than that.
2. UC's ending is already known, the novel series has been finished for a while.

I'm looking forward to it because it seems like it'll be a return to the form of Universal Century.
It also has a villain who is "totally not Char"
The Unicorn unit looks badass, especially transformed

Actually on second thought, it was pretty bad.
Stupid father thing. Why didn't the new type know that was his dad?
Stupid kid doing kung fu.
Stupid melodrama with the kid trying to get the girl to "use" him.
Maybe I have just grown out of Gundam.

Or an extreme case of cynicism. :(

Watched the very first of it. Watching the rest later.
Question: What is all that about the CE ending? lolwut? Isn't that SEED?
NOTE: I don't pay attention to split timelines/Big Bang ect.

That CE part is completely irrelevant to Cosmic Era, it stands for Common Era. In the official subs it's AD, as it is in the timeline.
The Universal Century and Cosmic Era have nothing to do with each other, since CE came after Turn A Gundam.
I re-watched it today on Blu-Ray, looked great.

It's been too long since I've read up on Gundam stuff. Making sure SEED is nowhere near anything good. Thanks. :/

Actually... I have the first 3 volumes. I do like it, I really should catch up on the rest some time. Thanks for the heads up though, had I not known about it, I would deffinently want someone to alert me to it.
O.T. - I was thinking about this forum the other day. Does anyone remember years and years ago, someone mentioning that if they made a Gundam game they'd make it like Dynasty Warriors? When I saw that game come out, it made me think of here. Anyone remember who came up with that idea?

I never thought of the possibility for confusion there, that's pretty funny. I sometimes forget that most people outside academia in North America use BC/AD instead of BCE/CE. It makes sense that Japan would prefers CE to something as Christian centric as AD. If I had things my way we'd date everything from the founding of Rome...
But anyway, I actually liked the first episode and I'm looking forward to the next one. Haven't been able to say that about Gundam for a while... I'm pretty jaded about most new anime myself.
