View Full Version : Snow? In my Central Valley California?!

Yeah it's actually snowing here! Sure it'll all be melted by noon, but it's snowing!

It's funny too because the local weather crew are acting like they don't even know what snow is, like the on-location reporter was standing there and was all

"It's like... rain, but colder and it doesn't feel good what on earth is this crap?!"

and now Leader Desslock will come in and laugh at me.

I'd hate to be out on those roads this morning, if they're filled with people who have little to no experience driving on them in those conditions.

Edit: My family in TX got snow a few days ago and my nephews were absolutely thrilled. They made (tiny) snowmen, but it didn't last longer than noonish. I told my Mom she should show them pictures of the blizzard of '78 in Indiana, back when my siblings and I were around their age..

It snows in the Central Valley every once in a great while. I have seen it snow in Fresno three times in my lifetime. I have seen it snow on the beach in San Francisco too.In the mountains it snows every year of course. They didn't call them the Snowy Mountains fior nothing. People have odd ideas about the weather in California. In once had a guy from New York confidently tell me that it doesn't get foggy in the Central valley. I grew up there and he had never been there but he was utterly sure of himself.

I heard it was snowing in Louisiana right next to the Gulf the other day, too. Weird.

Even weirder, the fact that it's already snowed almost everywhere else but has yet to snow in St. Louis. Lucky so far, I guess.

Ah, it's always weird to hear people talk about not knowing snow. Why, we've had a near-record snowfall in winter of '08, with nearly 4 meters all told. That's 13 feet. It's a lot of shoveling.

So far, it's barely snowed which is an irregularity around here. I'm sure I'll have lots to work with once Christmas comes around.

Global warming is the annual average increase of atmospheric temperatures across the entire globe. Cold winter temperatures in Nowhere, MN don't change that, as long as the global average still comes out higher than it used to be...

Trust me, it gets old quick. Particularly when you have several feet of the stuff in a long driveway, it's heavy because the snow was water soaked, and there is a c foot wall of highly compacted snow, slush, and snow partially frozen to ice at the end of your driveway. Have a few of these events happen along with some minor snow and some where the snow has been soaked with freezing rain for 2 or 3 winters and you will want to sit under a palm tree for the rest of your life very, very, very badly as soon as possible and never go back.

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nd1swHF1vPQ) one's old, but never fails to amuse me. Sure hate to be the ones at the back of that segmented bus....

Here in Denver the topography and street design seems to conspire against you, with a non-trivial number of intersections being at the tops or bottoms of inclines. Get one person stuck at the bottom and unable to get started again, or someone who didn't start their deceleration fast enough and starts skiing down through the intersection, and it makes for unpleasant commuting..

I lived with snow and cold for 20 years, I couldn't stand it anymore. Now I have palm trees around me and it almost never rains, never snows, and there are almost no clouds in the sky most of the year.

It snows in northern California so it's no big deal. Snow in southern California is, but it snowed in Florida, the Sahara Desert, and it snows often in Hawaii so this is no big surprise.

Um, duh? I know that. But Phoenix is warm a hell of a lot more than many other places in the country. Right now it's pretty cold, but last year it was this way for a little over a month at night. This year it's cold almost all the time, and it is probably going to last anywhere between 2 to 3 months if this keeps up.

Ahh. Well... feel free to blame my outsider's perspective. I kinda thought it never got cold in the southernmost states, due to their lattitude. On the other hand I have this image of some of the northern states as being perpetually frozen. See... America seems such a huuuuuuuggggeeee country that (unlike Britain) it could potentially span a whole range of climate types.

It does have different climates. And the geography is also very different and very varied. Plus not all of the states are connected. Florida is very much tropical, the middle states are almost completely flat, and you can see in all directions often for miles. States with the Rocky Mountains get very cold during the winter and the snow melts much later than what's below them. The desert actually has quite a lot of different landscapes too. The Northwest has a lot of forests and it rains most of the year in some areas. Hawaii is all tropical and has a constantly active volcano, and Alaska has a very harsh climate since it's so close to the North Pole.

But it's still not at all like you think it is. There's more to many states than what you see through the media.

Don't feel bad when I watch Dragnet and Friday says, "It was cold in Los Angeles." or "It was raining in Los Angeles." I'm like, "That happens in LA?" but yeah the US is practically a whole continent by itself so, as Kenpachi said, there is a large variety of climates and topography. I've heard that the thunderstorms we get are more intense because of the land and topography.

It's mostly the lack of humidity. Water has a high specific heat. A lot of energy is required to heat it and it releases quite a bit when it cools off. That moderates the temperature. The diurnal isn't so large. Very dry climates have a large diurnal. Land and air do not retain heat well like water does so the temperature drops fast when the sun goes down.

Lack of cloud cover at night also allows heat to escape more quickly.

Why does snow in Southern California seem strange? It's nothing new for us. We have the most diverse terrain in Cali: You can surf, ski, mtn climb, etc etc all rolled into one and the best part is that you dont have to travel that far. I just want Mammoth ski resort to open up so I can start snowboarding. Its been years since i last did this.

No, I'm allergic to inane drivel. Inane drivel like that meaningless statement. Could you make a more vacuous response if you tried?

There are a few reasons why I might ignore a given poster.

The main one is an attempt to increase the signal to noise ratio of the forum. People who post a lot of noise and little or no signal go there.

Some people go on there because in my opinion their posts are eyesores. I don't want to look at them let alone read them.

Also, chronic trolls go on there.

In my experience, people who insist in posting everything in bright colors or in bold are very often self-absorbed attention whores. The entire purpose of this behavior is to yell, "LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME" with every post. I would not expect this sort of poster to change his or her posting style out of something that concerns them as little as mere consideration for other people. That self-absorption and lack of consideration is usually reflected in the contents of their posts as well.

It looks as if members find other methods of attention whore-ing here but it highly recommended to just stay on the subject of SNOW. The constant complaining has no merit anywhere and has already been brought up, ad nauseam.
