View Full Version : What will this decade be known for?

Hello.

As it's 2009, that means the decade is coming to an end. And it also means it's a good time for a retrospective of this decade.

What I want is your opinion on what this decade will be remembered for, either newswise, or pop culture wise.

For me, it will be known for:

-9/11 and the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan that followed.
-the rise of reality television.
-The advancement of technology (I-POD) and the internet (Facebook, You Tube, Twitter)
-The growing awareness of global warming.
-The blundering George Bush years.
-The induction of Barack Obama as president.
-The age of paparazzi-worthy celebreties (Paris Hilton, Britney Spears)
-The global financial crisis.
-Such disasters as Hurricane Katrina and the Black Saturday bushfires.
-The tragic deaths of Steve Irwin, Heath Ledger, and Michael Jackson.

Of course there are other things I'd add, but I won't. If you have similar opinions, or want to add to the list, then be my guest.

This decade doesn't matter, what's to come is a real frustrating argument over the Mayan Calendar and people who count there chickens before they hatch.

^I agree with this. I feel like nearly everything I'll remember this decade for is negative things. Reality TV, the Bush years, emo kids, bad music, etc...

I can't think of any really great movies from this decade. Not really too many great TV shows either, except for Family Guy. Not for everyone, but it was something really different when it came out and a lot of people love it. That's about all I can think of. Most of the music I'll be remembering from this decade is indie music, since nothing but garbage has been popular, for the most part.

I agree with the advancement of technology and also advancements in mass communication. I really dont know that many people without a cellphone or who has not ever used the internet. Its easier for us now to communicate, share, make friends with anyone across the country or the globe.

Of course there are a lot of negatives in this decade as well but I'd rather comment on the good ones for now.

And this (talking to the audience) is why we have crappy music, a hotel survival guy, and Megan Fox.

Not that Megan Fox isn't hot, but I'd certainly take Ledger's acting.

The quality of music has gone down severely. It's hard to find good music these days. Even the pillows are sounding kinda lame these days (I miss the 90s).

Music will only get worse and worse. The people who like crappy music now will make even crappier stuff, and then the people who like that will make worse stuff, and then those who like that will make worse still.

The only way music can possibly be saved is if one or two revolutionaries come into the picture. People, we need an Elvis. :elvis:

I use Crappy Music to sarcastically describe the typical jargon involving the mainstream media that drag a large population into believing that's all the music there is.

Honestly if you care more about the fact that Micheal Jackson was a suspected child molester instead of a pop music legend then you are sticking your face in the *** of the media.

JoeStrummer
November 30th, 2009, 05:33 PM
You're never going to like anything new if you keep comparing it to The Beatles or Elvis (figuratively). It doesn't get worse and worse, only your perception. Turn off your TV like I said, and look for new and better things. Guess what, The Beatles were a boy band back in the 60's, and it wasn't like they were cool to any other underground scene afterwords, the 70's were full of New Wavers and Punks who damned Pink Floyd and the like, but that doesn't mean music got worse, just the fact that you only like that, and are only ever going to like that. Music doesn't suck, being close minded does.

I have to agree with what JoeStrummer is saying. I love classic rock, old school hip hop and the old music like the next guy but the new music isn't so bad either. There are a lot of good indie music out there if we take the time to look for it rather than hating whats playing repeatedly on the radio. Especially with mediums such as iTunes and other online music service, its so easy to find new artists and music to listen to.

Everyone has their positive and negative opinions about everything, you can't always assume everyone thinks of one band the same way as you do. of course, hearing new things always changes an opinion over something for better or for worse.

The only way to truly understand a band's personality is by listening to them. If you don't like it and you prefer something else, that is simply your choice.

^ To be fair, I dont think thats what Joestrummer was saying. I think what he is trying to say that if people actually took the time to look whats out there rather than depending on whats being fed to them, then they would see that there are a lot of good music being produced. Mainstream music isn't the only music that exists out there. THere are several outlets for music other than your radio.

Oooh, I can't stand people complaining about music nowadays... There are so many sucky music in every decade yet all you hear about are, "wow music nowadays suck"... Blah... I personally love music from the '70s, '80s, '90s, and '00s... Can't get enough of music, old or new...

Oops, off topic there...

If I'm gonna go with movies, I'd say the '00s were known for the fantasy flicks....

'20s: silents
'30s: screwball
'40s: noir
'50s: epics/technicolor
'60s: new wave
'70s: sci-fi
'80s: action
'90s: independent
'00s: fantasy

Haha, looks like AN's community is showing its age.

This decade has done us pretty well, to be quite honest.

A lot of healthy international incidents and mass communication has made the world just a bit smaller in my eyes. And though America has shared a turbulent decade courting and building a relationship with Islam and Middle Eastern culture, the public seems better for it. Rubbed raw and weary, I attribute that to the learning process.

I am, however, looking forward to making the next lesson a little less violent.

Maybe at first. I don't know. What I have heard is that a lot of drugs, if you are using them regularly, make it really hard to get it up. I'd like to add th at I don't know this from personal experience.

In fact in all honesty I can't imagine having sex on crack is in any way a good idea, cause you know what increases your heart rate? Sex. You know what else increases your heart rate? Crack. Sounds fun?

The answer is... probably, until your heart explodes. Same goes for Ecstasy and most other stimulant drugs, just happens that crack is pretty much the most powerful. Except Crystal Meth, I don't know for sure.

Honestly I'd say that the stories you hear associate some level of sexual dysfunction with almost any kind of drug habit. I completely doubt there's any way to use recreational drugs reliably as an aphrodisiac.

All the same regarding fashion, I bet you will look at video / film from the 2000s in about 20 years time and be able to say "that fashion looks very 00s".

I think that a lot of things which this decade will be known for won't surface until they become more important later on. Like people will say "it's the decade when [this-important-thing] took off" or whatever.

Will it be "oh god, do you remember twitter? yeah! what happened to that??" or "it really was the start of [abcdefg]. It's surprising, I thought twitter was going to be a flash in the pan"?

I think overall, the 2000s will be remembered as a decade of decadent and selfish self-absorbsion / self-obsession.

I chronicle the decades by video games:
2000: PS2, Dreamcast
2001: Xbox, Gamecube
2005: Xbox360
2006: PS3, Wii

This decade saw the birth of GTA as a mainstream game (versus its more underground PS1 days), and Halo, and 'mainstream' video games as a whole.

Also, I feel like every movie that came out after Return of the King has to be washed out and gray and blue or else it's not popular (read: Star Trek, Transformers, Batman Begins)

This decade, I felt that I endured an artistic depression, as the Internet, TV, and Print got more ridiculous and over the top to vye for the attention of the consumer. I saw the faith of a nation drop to the lowest I'd ever seen (and cared to notice, going into my 20s this decade) with a president that couldn't talk, that I felt grossly misrepresented me as an American.

It is my hope that the current presidency restores the morale to this country that we so badly need, and I hope that, if Obama wins a second term, that he brings to the United States and the world an age of prosperity that we haven't known for decades.
