I am sad that people will lose their jobs, but really Blockbuster is completely impossible to deal with as far as renting anything. The only business I ever do with them is buying used movies and games.

Never cared much for Blockbuster. I never liked their 800 pound gorilla attitude when they moved into many areas where they were not wanted.

I've actually been pretty happy with Blockbuster lately, so I'm going to be sorry to see them go.
I have a 3-out online rental plan, and it lets me swap out the mail-sleeves for free rentals in the store. Just yesterday I took one of my sleeves into a brick & mortar and walked out with Xmen Origins: Wolverine, which just came out yesterday. I like having the option of the online store with a bigger inventory, and the brick & mortars for day-of rentals.
Since BB stores are closing, I'm thinking of getting a Roku (netflix standalone player) for my Dad, so I can stream movies in his theater room when I'm over there. I hear netflix streaming isn't the best quality (for movies anyway, TV shows seem to be in HD), but hopefully they'll have some HD options by the time I invest in it.

I wonder if this has anything to do with how popular digital distribution is becoming...

I'd probably be tits on fire angry if I cared.
I just don't rent movies anymore. It's not like they'll be wiped off the face of the planet anyway.

LOL ..yeah I agree with this 100%. I mean whats the point in renting a video when it almost costs THE PRICE OF JUST GOING OUT TO BUY IT!!
sigh...
Really..is it that hard to lower the cost to rent something!? And gee makes people wonder why there in trouble.
Eh, I use Netflix anyway.
Heres my problem with this..I don't use netflix, I don't use online renting places for my renting choices.
Why?
1. I don't trust em.
2. I don't feel very comfortable knowing its coming in the mail. What if it gets broke along the way..or better yet what happens if it gets broke when I'm mailing it back hmm? I remember the complaints not long ago about netflix so no thanks.
3. And the most important reason..what about the people who don't own a computer or can't get online to rent items. That alone can cut out many potential customers. But thats my opinion.
Seriously, if they close any around me, then the damn town is dead.
Don't be too sure about that. When one door closes another one opens. With demand we'll have the good ol days back. You know the local video stores who don't have to rely on corporate policies. Maybe even more lower prices and deals on videos and games. I remember when mine closed down and it was a huge one all thanks to 1 hollywood video. So try not to dread too much.
@the story
Yeah this is defently not good news but maybe it will get them to wise up if they really want there stores to survive. Its all about competion and BB has the means to do it. Question is..are they willing to try it?
Still its never good to hear people losing jobs espically right now. :( It makes me wonder if hollywood video is next and how many stores will be cut. You know its coming. Not a question of how but when. :(

whats wit you people and netflix anyway. Do you really feel comfortable giving your credit card info and all that crap out online? Not only that but you can't take it back to a store you gotta mail it back so that must be a pain. Blockbusters has the option of both thus makes it better because for someone who prefers to do that kinda thing they can or if they wanna stick to the traditional and what not then they can do that too

I've been quite happy with their service, and unlike RentAnime.com, Netflix actually has all the other, non-anime content I want. Most of what I rent isn't anime, so Netflix makes sense for me. But they do have a decent selection of anime for when I want to preview a series to see if I want to own it.
Blockbuster has an online service, but their selection wasn't as good and I had made a personal vow to die never having owned a Blockbuster card, just 'cause it seemed like everyone else did.
Do you really feel comfortable giving your credit card info and all that crap out online?
Yes. It's no different than ordering from Amazon or Animenation.
Not only that but you can't take it back to a store you gotta mail it back so that must be a pain.
Yeah, it's a really long walk to the mailbox at the end of the driveway. Or, you know, if I forget to do that, then I actually have to walk 20 feet away from the front door to the coffee shop. It's quite a pain.
Well, I guess that it should be even easier for me to avoid ever owning a Blockbuster's card. That's one goal down. Now I can start working on never having a Facebook page.

3. And the most important reason..what about the people who don't own a computer or can't get online to rent items. That alone can cut out many potential customers. But thats my opinion.
I can see that being an issue in a country like Mexico where the villages in no man's land only have 1 pay phone in the entire village (like in that movie Babel) and mail here is inhumanely slow (everyone makes fun of US mail's slow pace, but that's like broadband in comparison to Mexico! No wonder online shopping is so uncommon here).
And despite it all, 90% of mexican homes have tv sets. You can be the poorest chum ever with 15 children living in a shack in some land you found that who knows who actually owns it, and you have your tv set watching telenovelas and futbol. At least 40% have computers. It's the internet connection speeds that are really sad though. ¬¬
Blockbuster has no worries in Mexico City because it's a city where there is no competition. I remember over 10 years ago there used to be a lot of mom % pop video rentals and another rental company (with far crappier choices than BB but far cheaper) called Videocentro and they all closed. So it's either BB or buy pirate movies which only cost 1 dollar.
I only go to BB on their Tuesday promotional days when rentals are OMG! 19 pesos (about 1.50 US). Their rentals on those special days used to be just 15 pesos which is a very good price I daresay, I rented far more often when they were that cheap. I'd never rent a movie for their standard 40 pesos (almost 4 US dollars). Despite the rampant piracy and sucky overrated prices they are still rather successful over here. DVD's are getting less insanely expensive, but it's still cheaper to rent most films and pirate movies are of varying quality.
It will take faster internet speeds and increased interest in downloading your own movies to take BB down over here.

I can usually get two movies per week with netflix unless I upgrade my plan. However netflix also offers movies you can watch online so you can virtually watch more movies. Theres a certain advantage that netflix have over Blockbuster.

Smart move, then the next time you go over to steel from someone, you wont have the nerve to check your facebook account and get caught.
