As a getaway driver he certainly had some of the qualifications: youth, stupidity and a blatant disregard for the law.
In one area, however, John Smith was lacking - he had no arms.
Not that this was to deter a gang who, a court heard, employed him in a £175,000 raid on a jeweller's.
Despite his disability, 18-year-old Smith, whose limbs end in stumps just below his elbows, managed to lead police on a terrifying 100mph car chase.
This is an inspirational story of a brave young man refusing to believe that his disability means he can't do things that other people can. Frankly, I'm proud of him.

"They said I couldn't do it. Because I didn't have the "arms" for it. But I proved them all wrong. I did what no other have done. I drove the car with no arms while shouting: "Look at me! No hands!" And now I'm in jail. I couldn't be more happy."

Well, there's at least ONE member of the gang that can't be charged with armed robbery...

Perhaps some young armless kid will read this story one day and say, "hey, if he can be a reckless, thieving scumbag, than so can I!"

"I make a motion that the lad be released on his own recognizance pending trial."
"Why's that?"
"Well, anyone can see - 'e's 'armless, your honor!"

Nobody can resist the long arm of the law. Hopefully, he'll be handed a harsh sentence because you have to reach out and get to criminals when they're young. When they can still grab a hold of their life and take it the proper direction. The authorities handled this well.

If this kid somehow did something so he could drive a manual car then he's beyond awesome.
This kid's like a young Alex Zanardi. That guy lost his legs in a racing accident then got back in a Champ Car (aka Indy car) with prosthetic legs and beat everyone and won the championship.
This kid should go into racing.

It's not surprising to me that this kid has learned to drive so well.
After all, it's not like he can hitchhike to get where he wants.

Imagine what he could do if he had some fake forearms and hands.
This kid rocks.

Does this mean we have to criticize armless woman drivers as poor compared to this man?

The defendant is not only charged with robbing a jewelry store, but resisting arrest.
Why? Because he failed to comply with the arresting officer's commands.
"I want you to step out of the vehicle with your hands up!"

I thought standard practice these days was to put your hands behind your head.
