(Sept. 8) - An Arizona man who has been served 37 speeding tickets in the mail is refusing to pay them because he says the pictures captured by the state's photo-enforcement cameras don't show that it's him driving, AZcentral.com reported Tuesday.
The photos on the tickets all show the driver wearing a monkey mask.
"Not one of them there is a picture where you can identify the driver," said Dave Vontesmar, a flight attendant who works at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. "The ball's in their court. I sent back all these ones I got with a copy of my driver's license and said, 'It's not me. I'm not paying them.' "
But police disagree and say they've been watching him closely.
"We watched him four different times put the monkey mask on and put the giraffe-style mask on," Officer Dave Porter told AZcentral.com. "Based on surveillance, we were positive that Vontesmar was the driver."
Still, Vontesmar is confident that he won't have to pay the fines, which could exceed $6,500.
"It's obviously a revenue grab," he said of the new photo-enforcement program. "They're required by law to ID the driver of the vehicle. If they can't identify the driver or the vehicle by the picture, what are they doing to identify the driver?"
Arizona police are having a hard time getting a lot of speeders to pay tickets they receive in the mail. Read more about that on AZcentral.com.

True but then he needs to stop giving the keys to his monkey friend.
Tsk tsk.

Hah, yeah, but this is likely a attention grab for something, he clearly intended to get caught.....37 speeding tickets? that isn't an accident.

Maybe there is an record for speeding tickets he's trying to break?
Seems like a good plan to use a mask then.

That is awesome. I remember hearing about something like this in the past. Basically, it was determined that they can still ticket the car, but not for the full amount if they can't ID the driver.

I'm guessing the cost of a ticket doesn't exceed the cost of missing a flight/job. Thirty seven is excessive, but I wonder over what period of time he received them.

I saw this on the news last night. I don't blame the guy, there are speed cameras EVERYWHERE in this state. Our speed laws are horrible.
People do this all over the world to avoid tickets.
Only in Arizona.
Our police are also total hard ***** and corrupt as hell, doing such things as being involved in prostitution rings, violating peoples civil rights on a daily basis, sometimes just because they are bored, and enjoy accusing random Mexicans of being illegal even though they might not be and beating the crap out of them.

Oh, I couldn't agree more. Even only with traffic laws, I see them break their own rules more than anyone else actually does.

People can sure be clever sometimes. I don't think I could keep a straight face while telling the police it was someone else driving my car in a monkey mask.

...This is good. I never thought about throwing on a monkey mask when I drive by one of those speeding cameras. And I do agree with Kenpachi on his statement above.

And the Mesa sheriff only makes things worse. Seriously the first person who runs for election in some position of power in this state who wants to get rid of all of this bullcrap has my vote 100%. Every time you put on the news there's another story of a cop doing something.
Seriously though, traffic laws are too damn strict. If you want to find the source of the problem with drivers in the state blame it on many of them being Californian drivers. After that comes drivers who came from the Northeast, but those I can deal with.
I'm considering moving to another state in a couple years, possibly Nevada since I don't like New Mexico and I want to stay in the desert. First I'll go back to school though. Sorry, but I like to go fast and Nevada has plenty of open desert in which I can do so.

I've seen this guy or his English equivalent hurtling through my local Highstreet at 4am in a monkey mask playing the Tarzan roar out of some giant speakers.
I thought it was a bit weird.

I have no problem with people using Marine Corps slogans. Just don't overdue it, or I'll call you a motard. Also Miko spelled oohrah incorrectly.

Seems to me that he should be responsible based on the fact that it's his vehicle, regardless of who's driving. I've never really understood why it doesn't just go by that. Perhaps someone more knowledgable about such things could enlighten me. :p

So lets rant about traffic police.
Why do they never seem to be around when *******s are driving, but when your front tire creeps over intersection line, they're on your *** like a wedgie?

What about the Mexican drivers? They go on the highway at frickin' 50 mph when the speed limit is 65 and if a lot of the time if you get into an accident with them they get out of their car and run away.
Also, you should be around southwest phoenix when UTI gets out. A lot of those guys fly like crazy out of there and the cops literally surround the area. I've seen some of these crazy bastards go 90 or more on Buckeye where the speed limit is 55.

Reminds me of what it was like in Nashville at NADC. So do they also drag race on the roads near the school? For everyone that went to NADC it was best to not let the locals know you were a student.

In some states the owner of the car is responsible for the ticket whether he is driving or not.

Nah drag races are on the tracks in the area. But the cops hate them. Absolutely DESPISE them.
