Bad timing for alleged Janesville bandit
By Bob Schaper
JANESVILLE (WREX) - An alleged bandit gets busted in Janesville after police say he tried to rob a bar full of cops.
Investigators say a masked man barged into Quotes Bar and Grill last night, pretending to have a gun. However, he was the one in for a surprise.
The Wisconsin Professional Police Officers Association, a statewide police union, was in Janesville this weekend for a golf tournament and Sunday night pub crawl. That meant downtown Janesville was the one place criminals didn't want to be.
Bartender Joe Collins says Sunday night was like any other night. That is, until about 11 p.m. when a masked man burst into the bar with his hands in his pants, some say, as if he had a gun.
"I heard someone yell, 'You gotta be kidding me' from this end of the bar," he said. "I turned around in time to see them grab a masked man and put him down on the ground."
The customers who took the man down were police officers from Eau Claire. Because of a police golf tournament on Monday, officers were in Janesville from all over Wisconsin. Like many downtown bars, Quotes was filled with off-duty police.
Investigators later identified the man as 18-year-old Alonzo Rucker. He told police he had no intention of robbing the place, and was just wearing the bandana so people wouldn't recognize him.
Janesville Police Deputy Chief Steve Kopp said, "You think of, you know, those stories that you hear of the stupid criminals and that sort of thing. I think this ranks up with those."
Rucker was booked into the Rock County Jail on charges of disorderly conduct and parole violations.
"It became a pretty big running joke," Collins said. "We had people from other bars call and coming down here, you know, just cracking jokes about holding napkins up and 'Stick 'em up.'"
What a dumbass.
