I'm surprised that no one never made a thread for this? :S
Anyways, I have only watched One Piece via this, not counting the atrocity that is 4Kid's Entertainment's Butchered Dub, or the FUNimation TV Dub.
I have seen all Episodes released on DVD so far (Episodes 1-66), thanks to a friend of mine that collects the DVDs and loves sharing :).
I don't care what anyone else says, I am loving this English Dub, it's perfect and exactly what I was asking for ^_^.
Anyways, what are your thoughts/opinions about it?

I've seen some of the first DVD. I absolutely loved it!
But I wish I had the money to buy the rest... :crybaby:

They do a decent job, Buggy and Luffy are done particurally well. I have all of them and we have only a few weeks until the Little Garden Arc is released I want to see if they keep Dorry and Broggy's laughs.

Oh that's right, One Piece Season Two: Second Voyage DVD Box Set (Episodes 67-78) is being released on August 25, 2009.
Cool :)!

I'm not really a big fan of the funi One Piece dub. It just comes across as an average dub to me where the main strong point has been keeping the story in-tact. I agree with Bernard Monsha that Buggy was done well (probably the truest voice out of the lot of them) but Luffy's voice has proved too tricky for funi; they just aren't able to capture that careless demeanor that Mayumi Tanaka executes so well which takes away from a lot of the humourous scenes, but I understand this is not a very easy thing to do when you consider the language barriers as well. A lot of the female characters' voices were done very well though.
Also a lot of the voices don't really sound natural to me, it sounds more like the VAs are trying really hard to hold the tone of the voice of the character they are in, particularly Ussop's VA.
But still though at least it's a far cry from what 4kids gave us, so average stands very tall compared to utter dubbing blasphemy.

I'm honestly not that interested in the dub, but the bits and pieces I've seen are perfectly reasonable. If I were a dub fan, I don't see how I'd have any reason to be disappointed. The voices sound very natural, they don't have that "autocue effect" you get with a lot of anime.
I'm not a dub connoisseur, but watching Youtube clips has given me absolutely no reason to complain. That's relatively rare. I'm sure not every voice captures every nuance of the characters perfectly, but then... they all seem to be getting the job done to a reasonable standard.

But that's not supposed to be out until August 25, 2009, how the **** did you get it 2 weeks early?

I love the dub the more I hear it and it sounds badass in 5.1
Acting aside which I think is great for both English & Japanese, the Japanese track just sounds way too flat in comparison. That's not what I want for this show. I find that the 5.1 English track more full of life with the action & wacky comedy scenes.
So yes, I prefer the English since its more enjoyable.
The only thing I don't really like are the dubbed songs. I usually switch tracks during the Opening songs, the Ending songs can be decent however.

Levon, after all these years, haven't you learned? Despite a couple fans here on AN, dubs are terrible and should never be watched.

I have now seen Episodes 1-103 of the GREAT and ALMIGHTY FUNimation Uncut and Unedited English Dub of One Piece.
I will be waiting until my friend gets One Piece Season Two: Sixth Voyage (Episodes 117-130) before I continue watching.

I think it's ok. Nothing stands out as horrible.
I haven't heard the 4Kids one in forever, but what's so different about the voice acting? It sounds like the same VA is doing Luffy and in the same style as the old one.

I am not hot on Sanji's voice but the rest are decent. Smoker's voice is spot on and Ace's voice is better than the Japanese version IMO.

The only reason I don't watch the dub is because of certain "colorful terminology" that Funimation has decided use for translating certain words* (and I don't want to debate the issue; that's just how I feel). For this reason, (and yes, I'm going to say it) I would only watch Funimation's dub on a mainstream, non-adult timeslot on TV since they can't use said "terminology" there. Cultural and societal differences aside, the fact of the matter is that One Piece IS a "children's" show, and I prefer to watch a translation that reflects that, which means, a translation that keeps the original music, and names, and doesn't try to change the original meaning, or make it sound more "adult" than it's supposed to be, and which at least tries to "tone down" anything that mainstream viewers might find to be too "violent" (BS&P and all that).
Again however, that's just how I feel about it.
*For example, I don't like how they sometimes translate "buttobasu" (admittedly I saw that on the official subs, but from what I've heard, they use that in the dub as well).

So your one of those people. Personally I think the casual swearing is fine, its on the same level as the Simpsons which was still a family show.
I find it much more creditable and powerful when Luffy says "I'm going to kick your ***!" over "I'm going to kick your butt!". That's something I can't take serious when the character is being very angry & serious wanting to hurt/kill someone.
This isn't a G rated show. It can be pretty violent actual, PG-13 level. So its no surprise the swearing is PG-13 level as well.

Agreed, all for me alone to love.

They are completely different. The biggest difference is Colleen Clinkenbeard's range. Well for one Luffy always sound like a boy unlike the 4Kids version and Colleen Clinkenbeard changes the tone completely when going from silly Luffy to serious Luffy. While the 4kids version Luffy always sound like a high pitched voice of a girl.

Meh, I get more annoyed at subbers trying to give magical meanings to words like nakama than I am with dubbers anglicizing curse words.
I just finished season 2 6th voyage the only dub character I did not like was Hina. Her habit of referring to herself in the third person was off. It was like she was quietly whispering to herself vs talking about herself in the third person like she does in the manga and Japanese soundtrack. I also liked Nami's fight a lot more, in the fact I found her screaming about Ussop's instructions hilarious. Pulled it off much better than the original for me.

According to the ADR director they are working on season four which should include G-8, Davy Back, Water 7, and Enies Lobby. If they continue with the release schedule we should be starting G-8 in December with Afro Luffy in February. I really want to hear Foxy's dub, I already have Gilbert Gottfried pegged for Moria.

Quick question. "Davy Back" is canon, right?

I personally don't like it, it's like one of the weakest arcs in my opinion......it just feels like it's an entirely different series, lol.
Don't know how else to express this "feeling" I get.
Oh, and I shall be watching Episodes 106-143 of the FUNimation Dub very soon.

We finished up Season Three First Voyage tonight. Some of the voices sound off however Noland, Bellamy and especially Blackbeard were dead on. I should be getting the second voyage mid August.

False. We'll be finishing Skypiea in December 2010 with Episodes 183-195.
Then getting G8 in January or February 2011 and Davy Back Fight in March or April 2011.

Yeah his voice is very cool. :smokin:
Its interesting going from season 2 to season 3, you really get to hear just how much different they sound compared to when they started. It did take them a few episodes to get into character.
