View Full Version : How to properly celebrate a 21st B-Day.

In less than a week (On SUnday to be exact), I turn 21. Now, don't get me wrong, I've been drunk before..but this is the first time I'll be able to do it legally.
So, tips for the night out? What are drinks I should look out for? Should I stick to Hard A or just beers? Have a place to crash or bring along a DA? Drinks I should try?
Oh! And also, is anybody on AN from Portland? Because that's where I am to be drinking! Voodoo Donuts ftw.

Well, at least you are not drinking every day, that would start to take a toll on you pretty fast. It's just too bad it's illegal... :(

Well, I drink, but not often. So, honestly I don't have much taste in beer/liquor and what kinds to buy. I've only had whats available to me, usually cheap stuff. What tastes good though? I'm not a fan of dark beer btw. Ales are gross.

I'm not really the beer expert, in fact I've grown a huge dislike for beer, perhaps I'm not trying the right ones or maybe it's because mixing welch's grape juice with vodka tastes so much better.

You're gonna get so smashed it will all taste the same anyway.
My suggestion? Instead of going out to drink, get a bunch of your friends together in someone's house or apartment and play a truly ridiculous drinking game. Do some research, but the best ones often involve a deck of cards, and variable amounts of drinking based on what card is drawn. Different suits and face cards can represent different things. Like I remember that in the game we used to play, a king allowed the player who drew it to add any rule of their choice to the game.
I forget the exact cards, because it has been a while since I last played a drinking game and the nature of them is such that you'll usually be hammered while learning the rules.
I do remember there were cards that reversed the direction, 'everyone drinks' cards, and cards that allowed you to nominate someone else to drink double what you drank on the next card turned over. Before anyone says something... yeah, these games can be a bit crazy if taken to excess. Set your amounts reasonably low.
Whatever drinking game you play, beer is usually worthless as a beverage for such things. It's too great a volume, compared with hard liquor. You won't be able to get enough down to play the game, unless you're drinking pitifully small amounts that won't even give you a buzz. Games like beer pong and Beirut are... inexplicably popular, but they tend to involve not actually drinking what I'd call a large amount.
If you're determined to give yourself a night you won't remember, drinking games are the only way. You can probably count on Daven III to supply suggestions for rulesets. I think it's acknowledged he's one of the resident heavy drinkers of the site.

King's Cup right?
Thing is, we do all this stuff ANYWAY. Like, just because I wasn't 21 doesn't mean I didn't drink. Last time I played Kings Cup, we played with TWO decks and got really, really, really drunk. It was awesome. But, we stay in at my house, my friends house, and get drunk all the time. I want a change of pace. I want to see what the hulabaloo is about with bars and such.

Actually that does like the game I remember. I never knew the name.
The main thing I have against bars and clubs is the expense, and that someone always needs to drive afterwards. If you have the party at someone's house, there are always handy sofas to crash on, then everyone leaves in the morning.
That and the fact that they are sometimes so loud that you can't hear anyone talk.

Well, good thing about birthdays, is that you get FREE drinks. And also, its your birthday, so you don't pay for drinks...your friends and the bars do. Its just...I'm always at my house, I'm always getting drunk somewhere, and after doing it for the past three years, its just another day to me. I don't want my 21st to be something I've done before, or did the week prior. I want to get drunk, but Goddamn in a new setting.

Oh sure, I can understand that. Do you live near a big city? If so, there's got to be a few clubs you can hit up.
VidelCoolGirl
July 8th, 2009, 07:20 PM
Olympia has a ton of bars, but its like...not much of a nightlife as somebody might assume? I like the big city, so Portland is far enough away so that I can be in a new setting, and with friends who will go up to all sorts of shenanigans with me. I don't like the idea of clubs, but I'm willing to go to a couple. I'll be drunk, so I wont even care.
Jon
July 8th, 2009, 07:44 PM
I don't like drinking games mainly because I hate chugging nasty cheap beer that everyone buys. Downing a crapload of Natural Light/Bud Light isn't my idea of a good time, especially since it takes a lot to get you drunk for beer pong. I remember a buddy and me won 13 or 14 games of bp in a row not only did it feel terrible, it tasted awful. Never again, though I do like my beer pong skills, they're pretty amazing.

Avoid this combination:
3 large glasses of beer
1 screwdriver
1 shot of straight Everclear
You will be drunk until Noon the next day AFTER you wake up, and have a satanic hangover and puke your entire system out several times.

You can think of nothing better to do on your birthday than do something that will make you forget it?
Go do something better with your time. Go out with friends to do something fun. Why spend hard earned money on something you'll literally piss/puke out in a few hours? You could go see bands play someplace, go bowling, skating, ride bikes around town, go camping, etc. and not one of those things excludes drinking, but getting blitzed out of your gourd is one of the biggest wastes of time ever conceived by mankind .

Except for seeing a band NONE of those are any way to celebrate you're 21st birthday.

Cocktails are pretty cool - but experimentation or picking a random one is even better. I'd steer clear of tequila. I ended up being carried out of my last party because I had waaaay too many tequila shots.
And Go clubbing. You shouldn't really have to pay but meh it's up to you.
Since its your 21st I suggest booking a central located (near the clubs) hotel and then it's much easier than making effort or money to go home. If you like the hotel idea then you should buy some alcohol before hand and drink there. Also getting pics beforehand the drunkeness is a good idea :D You don't want to ruin the night with no pics.
And don't buy cheap. (Rather whoever pays for your drinks).

If your going clubbing, prepare to spend at least 200 dollars. None of this scrooge stuff, tip your *** off. Clubbing is expensive unless your getting dudes to buy you everything, which is a good idea, since a guy will buy you anything no matter what you look like (nothing intended). The last time I went out, I spent 250 on me and a couple of my friends, ended up driving out to the middle of nowhere at 8 in the morning and strapping fireworks to a shopping cart, and driving it into a ditch. On my 18th (Canadian), I went to a golf course, got drunk and played golf, it was awesome. If you don't remember what happened the next morning, all that means is you had a good time and you don't need to remember. Drink whatever you like, because since it's your 21st, your friends SHOULD be buying you everything anyway, and in an hour your not going to care what your drinking and you'll end up drinking stuff you hate. A couple months ago, my boss let me into the liquor room in the back of our club and I guess I was drinking straight vodka out of the bottles, not that that's any kind of feat or anything, it was just really really cheap vodka out of a 60, and I was chugging it. I woke up on my lawn. Either way, have fun.

The tradition is normally for your 21st birthday, your friends will try to kill you in the name of celebration. All you have to do is have fun and not die. Oh and try not to get all your stuff stolen or leave all your clothes in another town or wake up in another country or anything.
It's ok to try new things but try to stick with one thing, since that ends up with least side effects.
For me, for example, red wine and whiskey DO NOT mix. I remember spending the next day feeling really grotty and throwing up stuff that's completely grey-black and thinking "OH. AM I DEAD NOW?"
If your going clubbing, prepare to spend at least 200 dollars. None of this scrooge stuff, tip your *** off.
Says the guy who works at a club...
I also disagree with JoeStrummer in that I think it's pointless having gone out if you have no memory of what you've done.
JoeStrummer
July 9th, 2009, 02:58 AM
That's just the excuse I use :P
And, I only spend that much because I tip well. It's engrained in me since I work in a club. Tip well, you get treated well.

Me and my friends all picked our favorite shot and tried to do 21 shots of it in one day.
I'd say going for 21 alcoholic beverages is a good start to your 21'st.
if you are determined to get trashed there is also Everclear as mentioned earlier in the thread.
Everclear is actually tasteless...so if you mix it with your favorite whatever..you won't taste it at all...but I don't reccomend more then say 4-5 shots of it, it is 190 proof. (95% Alcohol)
I remember making it to Shot 16 of Jack Daniels before Blacking out on my 21st...remember being carried through the city by one of my friends...I was in and out all night....
Make sure your friends bring a camera.....you'll have great stories and pics to go with it.

that depends on what her stomach can and can't handle...some people can mix others can't.
depending on her tolerance and her ability to hold her liquor she miht wanna try a buncha So-Co and Lime's or "Mind erasers" or like "Red Headed Sluts" "Kamakazis" those drink...while they "Sound" harsh are often contain far less alcohol then a straight shot of Whiskey.
although I do reccomend having one Liquid Cocain as a night cap...makes your breath all nice and minty fresh....it's made different ways..at home its equal parts Rumpleminze/Jager/Everclear... but at bar's I've had bartenders make it as Rumpleminze/Jager/Bacardi 151 and other stuff as well, the important part is the Rumpleminze to freshin you up.
Oh and you should have a Carbomb...everyone needs to try that once if they haven't...it tastes like chocolate milk...it's so good...I had a few myself last night heh.
and yeah, it's your birthday so if your friends are worth a damn you shouldn't have to worry about it, but I used to rack up 300 dollar tabs at bars by me, specificly one in New City...the 300 tab was usually HALF of my total tab and I'd Tip the Bartender 100-150 bucks.
So yeah big party nights can get expensive.

Yeah, I try to stay away from that stuff personally because something about all the sugar give's me a killer hangover, not to mention the colored liquor you are talking about are generally low on actual alcohol content, but That would be great stuff for Videl to "Try" on her 21'st birthday...they can be really tasty at times...very sweet.
I've been to a few bars where they have the bar girls walk along the bars (in short skirts of course :P) pouring these mixed cocktails into your mouth straight from the bottle....good stuff.
I don't know Videls area too well so unfortunately I can't recommend a specific bar.

Depends on the bar, I guess. The places I went to would always throw in quite a few shots of vodka in addition to the various coloured liquor. Sometimes rum, but always something hard to boost the actual potency. You could request a low, medium or high strength blend of any of their 'house specials at this one place.

I think it's more about the different between what we consider strong, something strong to me "Starts" at 80+ proof, straight Vodka is 80 proof, those colored alcohol mix's you are talking about usually have stuff like Sour Mix/Sloe Gin and various (Brand Name) "Pucker' liquor's to give them their taste and their color etc etc.... those liquor's generally range from 15-30 proof.
so what happens....is they do a mix say 1/3 Pucker 1/3 Sour Mix 1/3 Vodka....so now you got a 30 proof 30 proof 80 proof mix, add it up, 60+80=140 divide by 3 and you have a 46 Proof drink, (for what the bar considers the "Strong" version you can probably sub Bacardi 151 in for the 80 proof, still the 30 proofs knock it down) which don't get me wrong is still strong compared to like...a regular beer which is 8 or so proof, but considering I drink so much straight Jack Daniels myself which is 80 proof to "me" those colored drinks taste weaker, and drinking them takes longer for me to get were I wanna be if you catch my drift :P that said, when you order a cocktail you are getting 12-16+ ounces when I order a shot I'm usually getting 2 maybe 3 ounces if I ask for a tumbler....but the specifics are not important for a 1 night turning 21 drink fest....
I do think the mixed drinks are a good way to go for a birthday party especially for a girl, I also think her friends should go to one of those websites that lists all types of weird shots and she should try a whole bunch of them....Baby Beer/Mind Eraser/Kamakazi/So-Co and Lime....try all that stuff, cause that's stuff you aren't going to drink at home while playing *******/Kings or Bet your Liver or Beer Pong/Beirut.

I think the whole idea that going to get stupidly drunk on your 21st birthday just because you are now of legal drinking age like it's something special is also a dumb idea. I've never really understood why some people have such a fascination with booze anyways unless they're just trying to relax or if they actually enjoy the taste, but it sounds like Videl just wants to do it because its the cool and hip thing to get crazy drunk and look like a dope in front of everybody. Go do something that's actually fun and something that will truly make your 21st birthday meaningful, instead of getting a hang over and having to vomit in your toilet from over drinking.
Obviously I'm not much of a party person. I actually don't ever celebrate my b-day. I hate getting old, so I just tend to avoid most people.
Me too. Don't think I've actually celebrated my birthday besides going out to get something really good to eat since I was like 17 or 18 years old. I'm not really much of a party person either. Unless I'm going out to have fun or hang around with friends, and not just go to a party full of people I don't know with the primary objective to get drunk and act like a bunch of animals, my idea of a relaxing fun time is probably just kicking back at home and chillin out.

The UK proof to ABV is 4:7 ratio. In the USA proof to ABV is 1:2.

No,...that's why i said no more then 4 shots, otherwise it gets dangerous...
and by dangerous I don't mean.."OMG I'm gonna be so drunk Lawlz" Dangerous...I mean, dangerous as in you won't get drunk, you'll just like...fall into a coma..you'll definitely have to go to a hospital, most I've ever seen anyone do is 6 shots and the guy weight 280 and was out for the night.
I don't recommend anyone "else" do more then a shot or two of it to tell you the truth.
The theory behind my Everclear love is 3 fold.
#1) It's Cheap...20 bucks for a 750ml
#2) If your mixing it it has NO TASTE, so you mix 3 shots in a 12oz glass of OJ it tastes like Orange Juice straight up...
#3) it gets you drunk, and sometimes....that just were I wanna go :P
we are getting Side tracked though.
so to get back on topic. if you wanna save some Money Videl, make a batch of Jungle Juice.
1 L Everclear® alcohol
5.25 L (3 1.75L bottles) vodka
1 bottle peach schnapps
1 pint Bacardi® 151 rum
1 bottle 99 Apples® apple schnapps
10 L Sprite® soda
1 L Sunny Delight® orange juice
1 L triple sec
1.75 L bottle gin
1 bottle DeKuyper® Sour Apple Pucker schnapps
4 bottles Boone's Farm® Strawberry Hill wine
8 L Hawaiian Punch®
2 containers orange juice concentrate
fruit (as much as desired)
I change that up and add more Everclear but half the fun of making the Jungle Juice is getting it right and trying it while you do lol.

I should get you to try the red lambrusco they're selling at Lidl down the road. I know you love carbonated grape drinks... red lambrusco is [shamefully weak shamefully council estate shamefully girly non-rocket-fuel] giggle juice that is just grape juice that seems to have gone off a bit.
It's got hardly any alcohol in it at all but you're a total lightweight so it doesn't matter. You might like it.

Hmm I'll try to explain again... (but really it's just ABVx2 period)
a ScrewDriver is simple and easy to explain with.
say for example you order a Screw Driver and it comes 1 Part Vodka 2 Parts Orange juice the Glass is 12oz, you have 8oz of OJ and 4oz of Vodka... that would mean 4/12ths or 1/3 of your drink is "Vodka" and the other 2/3's is "Orange Juice" Orange Juice has a ABV rating of 0% because there is no alcohol in Orange Juice, Vodka has a ABV of 40%, so what you do it you take the 40% from the Vodka, you add it to the ZERO from the Orange Juice, and in this case since a 1/3 and 2/3 mix you divide by 3.
1st 3rd of your drink = Vodka 40% ABV
2nd 3rd of your drink = OJ 0% ABV
3rd 3rd of your drink = OJ 0% ABV
40/3 = 13.3333%
a 1 Part Vodka 2 Part Orange Juice is 13.333% ABV or 26.666 "Proof"
I started trying to do it for the Jungle Juice but it would have been way to difficult math for me considering I was out till 5:30AM last night and in to work at 9 today, If I were to "guess" I'd say the jungle juice would fall between 40-50 Proof...or 20-25ABV...

That's what I thought, so no matter what the combination is for Jungle Juice, alcohol by volume cannot possibly be higher than the strongest thing in it when it's "diluted" by so many other drinks.
So the 190% urban legend can't possibly be true.

Correct, Jungle Juice can not possible be 190%, the only thing you can drink that is 190% is "Grain Alcohol" often called "White Lightning" or "Moonshine".... the commercial version of which (at least the only one I've ever seen, And I've seen a lot of alcohol and used to work in a liquor store) is Everclear....which is only legal in about half the states in America in the first place.
There supposedly a "Vodka" Devils something...I forget...that is 160% proof
If you can get your hands on some Grappa that stuff is usually 100-120% Proof as well if I can remember correctly.
there is a Bacardi 151 Rum which is 151 proof rum...
then a whole bunch of liquors at or around 100 Proof
but yes, long story short in the end, and "Mixed" drink if its mixed with low percentage alcohols or other juices or soda's are going to be diluted quite substantially depending on the mix ratio, Jungle Juice by its definition needs to taste "sweet" in order to make alcohol taste sweet it's clearly got to be diluted.

drink whatever you want
try something mixed with red bull
try a 32-40oz beverage (like old english)
try something trendy like a midori sour
or a mojito
try something with tropical like a hurricane
and something to heat you up like bailey's and milk
but def. have champagne at midnight even if you're playing a drinking game with natty ice.

Wow, so much hostility. I just asked for 21st B-Day ideas, not to be judged over what drinks I have.
On the note if I can handle it or not...I can handle my fair share of shots (when I first got plastered, I had at least ten shots...half of those I'm pretty sure were doubles). I can mix fine, its just the time frame in which I drink that I need to work on. I drink a lot in a short amount of time. I need to space my drinks out, and have a limit for myself.
Natty Ice is disgusting. Light beer is disgusting. Cheep beer aside from Olympia and Pabst is disgusting.
I don't want to make a fool of myself. I'm not only getting drunk...we're spending the day in Portland, and THEN drinking. I don't want to be drinking all day. I want to be in the company of best friends, THEN drink with them. Seriously, give me some credit.
I hate the idea of '*****-brew.' Mattering on what I'm feeling like, I can have a Mikes and enjoy it, or I can take shots with friends and enjoy it. Its all based on my mood. I don't feel like a 'sissy girl' drinking a screwdriver. If I don't want to drink too much, I have something that wont get me drunk. Simple as that.
It takes me about four shots to get tipsy to drunk. Six to be drunk. More to get me drunk drunk. I'm a heavyweight when it comes to drinking. I don't do it often, but when I do...more times than not I can outdrink my friends. Nothing to be proud of, but I can.
edit: The drink with the Red Bull....I had something that was like, Tangerine Vodka, Red Bull, and Orange Juice. A Tic Tac or something to that effect. Very tasty.

I think what people don't get is that I want to break away from the house and town I see everyday. Honestly, I don't want just 'another night.' My friends and I drink all the time at my house, other peoples' houses, and then my house again. Also, I'm, a film student...we don't have 'study nights.'
Maybe I should rephrase my question:
Bar room etiquette?

That's why I was mentioning all those weird shots, it's nice to try out some stuff you don't drink while your home playing *******/Kings/Beer Pong.
If you are talking about "Clubbing" I can't help you too much, I go when Girls force me to occasionally and stand there looking stupid...I much prefer a bar, or a place with a good live band.

Oh, the club scene doesn't interest me. Not so much the atmosphere, as much as it is the mentality of most of the people there. The type of people that go to bars I can't usually stand.

all types of people go to bars....you just have to find the bar that your type of people go to.
There is this one hole in the wall bar called old town inn by us, noone "Plans" on going there because its the crappiest bar in the area...me and my friends went out to 5 different bars last night and still ended up there....it's the people that make a bar not the bar that makes it.
stay out till 4 and then go to the bagel place right up the street that has the best bagels in the world and opens up at 4am right when the bar closes, I don't know, its just like certain bars have a great atmosphere due to the people that hang out there...others suck for the same reason.

Where are you going that looking at someone will get you in a fight? I work in a country "club" and even the rig pigs, and the dudes in tapout shirts don't start anything. Mostly cause I work in a country club and the bouncers are pretty rough dudes, but it's really not as bad as you make it sound. I used to shoot Everclear in highschool, I don't anymore, I don't see the point in shooting it. I'll still mix it though if I'm lookin' to get bombed. I don't like clubbing either, dancing is lame, I like going to pubs with live bands and wide ranges of whiskey so usually Irish or Scottish pubs. I'm in BC right now on vacation and there's this sweet little Irish pub not far down from me that's got the biggest selection of whiskey I've ever seen. Just go somewhere small where you like the music, and bring as much friends as possible. I grew up in a really small farm town and every night in school we'd go there, they didn't ID, with like 30 people and just wreck the place.

Or if there's an event going on like a concert or something, you can always go there first and hit some bars afterwards...

yup meant 9-10 is when you should get there...it "seems" the most time people spend at bars is usually about 4 hours :P
12-4 for bars that close at 4 (NY) 10-2 (NJ and PA)

could just have a party then go out, cheaper I suppose, but as it's your 21st money shouldn't be an issue
if you plan on staying at a bar for a while tip the bartender and always get your drinks from them, might get served faster.
Be well rested, it sucks being tired, I've fallen asleep in places due to combined tiredness and drunkness, not good.
