Standing on planes a step closer?
Chinese airline asks government for approval

An airline in China has asked its government for permission to sell standing tickets to passengers.

In a move Ryanair would arguably be proud of, Spring Airlines is looking to increase its capacity by letting people stand in the aisle.

Despite the global economic turmoil, the Chinese low-coster has seen passenger numbers soar – so much so that its orders for new planes can’t keep pace with the demand.

The standing tickets would be cheaper than seats and would allow up to 40% more passengers on board.

Spring Airlines’ President Wang Zhengua said he was confident the government would approve the request. He claims the idea was actually mooted by China’s Vice-Premier Zhang Dejiang.

“He suggested that, for a lower price, passengers should be able to get on a plane like catching a bus, with no seat, no luggage consignment, no food, no water, but very convenient,” Wang said.

Allegedly plane manufacturer Airbus has previously suggested standing-room areas on planes. Its plans reportedly had passengers held against a backboard by a harness during take-off and landing.

That is the most screwed up thing I think I’ve ever heard of. I really don’t see that being approved of by the ICAO or any responsible aviation body . . .

What on earth is this ****, whoever made this idea should probably get caught in a bambardment of soggy tissues naked in the middle of the street.

What happens when there's severe turbulence? Even a landing would cause a fall.

Why don't they just have everyone lie in horizontal, multi-layered, stacked bunks.

I'd much rather not...

I did once have an idea where you would put each passenger into a lightweight, self-contained pod and then stack them up to the roof of a cargo aircraft. You could fit many more people like that than in a conventional passenger aircraft. Then I realized that it would basically be a cargo plane stuffed full of people in coffins so I dropped the idea.

It would've been awesome to see an emergency air drop of all the "cargo".

In hundreds of years people will start doing stuff like that. The world will be so overpopulated there will be little choice.

Count me in as one of those who doesn't like this plan either.

Excellent point. Well said." Thumbs Up"

What is this a school bus..no its an airplane! A transportation meant to get a person to a place around the world much faster. Even then that takes hours and I don't truly seeing people standing on a plane for so many hours straight..there legs are bound to cramp.

And to be honest...could 40% more people be able to truly fit in a plane without causing some kind of weight limit/risk? I don't see that. Some stories suggest we should reduce how many people can be in a plane for safty reasons.

I'm defently no expert but i defetly agree with anyone that says it about this plane idea..

this is the most dumbest thing i've ever heard.

How about we just brutally murder the passengers beforehand. It will save time and resources for the same outcome.

There's an idea actually. You wouldn't even have to land. You just open up the cargo doors, the pods slide out and their parachutes open.

Sheesh, do I have to explain, EVERYTHING?

Waltsph said "this is the most dumbest thing i've ever heard." So I posted the lyrics to Alanis Morriset's 'Ironic'. I was trying to be subtle, but I guess I need to smack you guys in the face with a brick wall to get it though.

fixed.

I'd buy ticket. I rarely need luggage where I'd fly, airplane food is crap anyways and standing among people is bound to be more social than sitting.

Ehh! I was in the Navy and it wasn't that bad! On ships, bunks are stacked only three high. As for standing on planes, to quote Ah-nold from Predator....bad idea!

This is true.

But given the context, I'd say most of us got it, except (and this is to be expected), the person it was aimed at...

That's... not efficient at all. That's a misapplication of a space-travel artificial gravity concept in a totally inappropriate setting (gravity, aerodynamic flight.)

I can imagine this to be like India where all the people fight to climb all over the train.

But in the air with all the Asian people getting pissy about their spot they are tightly clinging to on a plane.
