It's a black week for celeberties.

I just found out that British actress Mollie Sugden (Mrs Slowcombe from 'Are you being served?') has died.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/07/02/2614485.htm

Mollie Sugden, the TV actress who played the cat-obsessed Betty Slocombe in Are You Being Served?, has died aged 86.

She was born in 1922 in Keighley, West Yorkshire, and became a household name after appearing in brightly-coloured wigs as the social climbing matriarch in the TV comedy series between 1972 and 1985.

She also portrayed Mrs Hutchinson, another battleaxe, in The Liver Birds.

Agent Joan Reddin said that Sugden's twin sons, Robin and Simon Moore, were at her bedside when she died at the Royal Surrey Hospital on Tuesday (local time) after a long illness.

"She was a lovely, lovely person and I never had any trouble with her. She was a great professional," said Ms Reddin, who represented Sugden for 30 years.

Ms Reddin said Sugden never recovered from the death of her husband, actor William Moore.

"They were very much in love. She started to go down when he died," she said.

Sugden starred in many other comedies, including Come Back Mrs Noah, That's My Boy and My Husband And I, which she made with Moore.

She trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Her early career was spent in repertory theatre, where in Swansea in 1956 she met Moore, who she married two years later.

Sugden's Are You Being Served? co-star Wendy Richard died earlier this year aged 65.

May you be making cat euphenisms in the Grace Bros. store in the sky.

Had you listed the actress' name in the thread title, I'd have never known who it was. But the moment I read Mrs. Slowcombe I thought, "NOOOO!!!"

Damn! RIP, crazy cat lady.

Really? I could never forget a name so distinctive as "Mollie Sugden". You don't get names like that anymore, least of all in showbiz.

Oh it takes a strong woman to be able to deliver these lines with a straight face.

at least she's a reasonable age, 50 is a bit young no matter who you are.

Ahh, she was a distinctive and entertaining presence on so much British comedy. I can definitely say that I'm slightly sad about this one. I've seen her performances so often.

Damn! What a shame! I loved watching Are You Being Served which was my all-time favorite Brit-com. And Mollie's passing came after Karl Malden's. How sad!

Put it this way, she was 50 in 1973, when Are You Being Served was still a fairly new TV series and most of the series hadn't been made yet.

I wonder if she was famous for anything in her younger days...? Her entries on the various internet databases don't seem to reflect it, but then they might just not be complete.
