Western Studio Ghibli fans will be relieved to know that Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animated film ‘Ponyo’ is due to launch in the US on August 14th. Marking Miyazaki’s tenth contribution to the Ghibli collection, the story focuses around the friendship between a baby fish (Ponyo) and a five year old boy called Sōsuke. The film has been planned to open across 800 screens in the US, which is the biggest opening of any Miyazaki animation to date. Topping the record breaking domestic release by a whole 319 screens.

Ponyo is known in Japan by its full title; “Gake no Ue no Ponyo” (崖の上のポニョ), which when translated becomes “Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea”. This was then shortened by Walt Disney Home Entertainment, for the US release. Miyazaki first released Ponyo in Japan on July 19th 2008, which despite being in competition with the latest Pokemon movie, reached 83% of Spirited Away’s opening figures by 3pm on the first day. The film then went on to gross a record breaking ¥30.4 billion ($284 million USD) in cinema alone. Ponyo will be released on DVD in Japan on Friday July 3rd.

The US release of Ponyo will be dubbed by a variety of famous actors; Matt Damon... read more. (http://japcult.blogspot.com/2009/06/ponyo-us-release-august-14th-2009.html)

Personally already having seen this film, I would highly recommend it to any fan of Miyazaki's work. Unfortunately, I can't vouch for what the US dubbing will be like though... Maaatt Daaaamon. >_<

Has anyone seen this yet? I've seen a few commercials, so far... I have to say I'm a tad disappointed by the fact that it's being re-done by disney.... They can stick to their Pixar stuff... I hope the dubbing is alright....

Watched it yesterday. It was cute! And the length was about right. The voice acting was very good. I am satisfied with the plot and ending. It is a new version of a classic fairy tale, but with some differences that are certainly quite off from the most famous retelling.

...Matt Damon? Really?
I saw and adored the sub of this, but the dub seems like it'll be a little off.

I saw it as well, and while I would have perferred it in with subs, the dub wasn't bad. It felt as if it could have been 20 minutes longer, but overall, very good. =)

It was pretty good overall ... Liam Neeson was cast pretty well.
