so if you've watched the anime series and movie (i havent watched movie yet), which volume should you start with on the manga?

but i also hear that the anime differs from the manga a lot during the middle and end of anime. so would i have to read the manga from the very beginning? i really hope not

but if i do, could i just watch Brotherhood which is more close to the manga (right?) and then read the manga from where brotherhood ends?

btw

is the current story in the manga related to Al and Ed trying to find themselves again? i cant see any other reasons why it would still be continuing

From roundabout Chapter 30, when Greed kidnaps Al, the story goes in a completely different direction than the manga - as in the whole story from that point on in the anime is all made up by the studio.

So since the second half of the anime doesn't count as canon material from the manga, you're either better off waiting for Brotherhood to get to the part with Greed or you can read the manga from Greed's entrance if you don't feel like reading it from the beginning. In my opinion though you should read the manga from the beginning (if you plan to read it), there are minor bits here and there that weren't included in the anime and they're quite interesting to see as they give you a better feel for the manga's world.

But the best option for you is to just watch Brotherhood. The manga is roughly 20-30 chapters away from the end and I don't know how you would feel about reaching the latest chapter when you're not too far away from the series' climax. Brotherhood is likely to follow the entire manga up until the end when you consider the timing of the anime compared to the manga, so maybe it would be best for you to just watch Brotherhood the whole way through and read the manga afterwards or vice-versa - it's up to you.

Start at volume 8. I was wondering the same thing and that's where I started. I think there are some pretty small little differences before that, but when Greed meets the Fuhrer in the sewers is where the two start to get radically different.

Yep that is when it breaks and goes in a great new direction!
